The words " 'Though around the girdled earth they roam, Her spell on them remains ..."never were more meaningful than the evening they echoed across the Sumida River. Our summer season was highlighted by an excursion in Japanese fishing boats on Tokyo Bay. We enjoyed watching the netthrowing art of the versatile Japanese fisherpura cooking. Chiming in on the Dartmouth songs after the big dinner as the boats turned homeward were Takanaga Mitsui '15 and his wife Hiroka, Takanobu Mitsui '43, Robert Blood '42 and sons, Peter and Allen, Ben Gilson '54, Warren Girard '55, John Palmer '56 (taking many pictures), Monk Bancroft '57 and joe Stevenson '57. We welcomed several new faces: Lou Parker '37, whose strong voice will be a great addition to our vocal attempts, and John Koehring '56, who is with the Navy on a brief tour in Japan. With regret we said "Sayonara" to Bob Blood who returned to Michigan in July.
On August 28 the Fall Season Kickoff was held at the Foreign Correspondents' Club. Virginia and Hartley Caldwell '23 not only devised a most unique punch but added the final touch with a "Fill the Bowl Up" sign which could not be resisted. Yoji Hirota '29 journeyed up from Kamakura to join the festivities while Joan and John Greenwood '51 traveled from Kobe. Mr. Hirota is an active writer in the field of international relations, while John is with the Bank of America. We welcomed Monk Bancroft's new "okusan," Marsha, who just arrived from the States. More of the regulars present were: Dodo and Roger Haley '43, Ray Dickinson '37 (all with the Air Force at Tachikawa), Warren Girard '55, John Palmer ’56, Sarah and Ben Gilson, Hiroka and Takanaga Mitsui '15 and daughter Tamiko, and Nobu Mitsui '43. After a hearty dinner Hartley toasted the Capital Gifts Campaign reaching its goal. We discussed possibilities of stimulating interest among Japanese students for Dartmouth and laid plans for our fall season. Ben and Hartley joined in leading twenty-odd voices in some rousing Big Green songs to bring the evening to a wonderful climax.
