The Emperor's visit to the United States was the subject of lively after-dinner discussion at the Tokyo American Club on November 6. DickHolloran '51, The New York Times bureau chief in Tokyo, who has been Emperor-watching for a number of years, having attended the rare press conferences, led the way with insights into some reasons for the Emperor's warm American reception and the meaning of the trip to Japan.
Takeaki Naito of the Tokyo Shimbun, who accompanied the Emperor to the U.S., spoke of the rigors of the schedule, the tight security cover, and the reactions of Japanese-Americans.
Bill Breer '57 introduced the speakers; and Yoji Hirota '28a, Alan Smith '50, and PhilCalkins '58 were among those active in the discussion. Club President Chick Igawa '57 welcomed ex-President Masuo Iwanami '27 and new members Bob Grondine '74 and GeorgeBikle '51.
