Our monthly luncheon was held March 24, and our speaker was William H. Swift III, President of The Plantations Bank of Rhode Island. Mr. Swift is a member of the Weekapaug Group, and he spoke on the activities of that organization. The month past was a fairly inactive one for us, and the work of the Weekapaug Group is so important that a few lines will be devoted to telling you something about it.
The name derives from a meeting held in September, 1957, by thirty-eight of the key businessmen of this state at the Weekapaug Inn, which is located at the southwestern corner of Rhode Island. The express purpose of the meeting was to discuss ways of improving the business climate in this state. In the several years since, the Weekapaug Group has been responsible for initiating specific action toward correcting areas of weakness in Rhode Island's business climate. There has been an evaluation and marshalling of the state's resources and a better understanding of its liabilities. Numerous business climate seminars took place the week of February 29 through March 4 of this year. The primary purpose was education, and the important subjects of taxes, highways, and education were covered.
Most of us are confident that a more prosperous Rhode Island will be the lasting contribution of the Weekapaug Group's efforts.
