"Who was that Pink Lady I saw you with last night?"
"That was no Pink Lady, that was my wine!"
This example of snappy tent-time repertoire serves to warn the sourpuss and weak-gastric-organ echelon that their fun-loving brethren are packing their wives, golf clubs, and other belongings, and heading for the hills—the white ones, that is. Should the dour and dreary ones expect to find the atmosphere of an undertakers' convention prevailing on the scene, they'd be well advised to seek a different locale. The Class of 1950 will meet for its tERRIBLE tENTH rEUNION, and it will be a gasser! All of the details have long since been put into your hands and most of you have made up your minds to brave the rigors of dormitory living for the weekend. Specifically, who'll be around? Check the asterisks (*) and see!
THE HITCHING POST
Latest brave to be nuptially-knotted is BillSapers (*) who wed the former Rhoda Janice Berman of Brighton, Mass., in March. The bride attended Beth Israel Hospital and Boston University Schools of Nursing. They're making their home in Boston where Bill sells copious amounts of insurance.
WALKING THE LAST MILE
Big news from the big steel town reveals that Hugh McKenna Lynch and Miss Jane Ann Lees of Sewickley, Penna., will be married. She was graduated from Bennington College and is a member of the Pittsburgh Junior League. The Red One received his B.S. from Carnegie Tech in 1952, his Master's in electrical engineering in '53, and now is a member of the faculty at Shady Side Academy.
Big doings on the academic frontiers where Tom O'Connell (**) has been made Director of Massachusetts' first state-supported community college (named Berkshire, and located in Pittsfield). About 100 to 125 students are expected to register next fall for courses in liberal arts, electrical technology, or business. Arts students can transfer to four-year institutions after four semesters. Tom has been serving as a consultant on the Community College's Board studying the need for these establishments and should enjoy the challenge of getting the first one into operation.
INFANT INFO
Good tidings from Stamford, Conn., and the St. Joseph Hospital there, tell that Tonyand Arlene Poltrack have their second male child, Leslie Anthony, born April 15. Elder brother Arthur was two last month. The middle-of-April arrival must be comforting when thinking a year ahead to the next income tax date and the extra deduction.
INKADENTAL INTELLIGENTZ
Two other educational items include the latest data on Gary Johnson who has returned from Deutschland and now studies and teaches German in Ann Arbor, Mich.; and on Max Welborn who can be found in Waco, Texas, where he is in the history department of Baylor University.
Dr. Tom Tomasi has been named acting chairman of the division of experimental medicine at the University of Vermont College of Medicine from which he graduated in 1954. He's been conducting research at the Rockefeller Institute in New York, where he is an associate. Tom interned and served as a resident at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, and he's working on a Ph.D. in biochemistry. The Tomasi clan include three offspring at latest count.
Bob Jones says he still has his own choppers and peepers sharp enough to see everything worth while. Running his own business in Alabama, he found time, nevertheless, to report on several classmates, as follows:
Barney McPhillips is happily submerged in suburbia in Oswego, Ore., where he and Molly keep trim running after Barney III and Ramsay, ages seven and four. Miles Mills has a delightful habit of calling long distance in the middle of the night. Dave Taylor and Orlian send wonderful Christmas cards from San Francisco. Arranged a trip to the Atlanta glee club concert in March with Joe and Lucy Ware '52 and received a cordial welcome from Dick McCarthy.
Bill and Joanne Streng (**) expect to make it from Carmichael, Calif., to reunion. Their progeny include Monica, nearly six, and George William IV, going on three. Bill is a partner in Streng Brothers Homes, residential builders in the Sacramento area. Transferees take note!
Chuck and Alice Lee McCaleb recently headed west for Cupertino, Calif., with Donald C. ("Skidge") who's eight, and Nancy A. ("Widge"), just five. Chuck is publications engineer at Lockheed working on the Polaris program.
Note from Frank Dickinson (**) says he finds business pretty good for the Haynes Stellite division of Union Carbide in New England.... Jim Moore has been an associate of the Philadelphia law firm of Duane, Morris and Heckscher since September, 1956. He and Betty live in Bryn Mawr with year-old Melinda... . Dr. Robert D. Wilson is in practice at Presque Isle, Me... . Brad Richardson is an administrative assistant for FIF Management Corp., Denver, and lives in Littleton .... Tom Sheridan is a sales representative for The Great A. & P. out of Paterson, N. J., and resides in Sparta.
Had a good letter from A. C. Dickson between jaunts for the National Bank of Detroit where he is an assistant vice president. He and Joy have two boys, Chip and Bart, in the seven and four categories, and see Tom McMahon, fellow Motor City golfer, family man, and insurance seller, regularly. Dave and Lee Pittinger (**) are not too far away, in Birmingham, whence Pitt journeys to drum up trade for the Nichols Wire and Aluminum company.
GOTHAM GATHERING
Rapidly becoming a class tradition is the springtime dinner and what-all which convened April 26 at the midtown center of Indian affairs. Organized and arranged by Clift Whiteman (**) and Chuck Gardner (**), it was a fine affair with better than two-dozen braves on hand for chow, plus four tippler-only gents. Joel Leavitt (**) was first through the turnstile, button-holing prospective reuners. Bob Mcllwain (**) chaired the meeting and collected sheckles ably. Bob Ferguson, Bill Christgau, and BobSmith (**) led the post-party foray to the Gaslight. Bill Cross (**) displayed his new office in the Time building beforehand, and Jim Lyons (**), recent addition to the New York staff of Kidder, Peabody, told us he and Mary have a new nipper, Mary Jo, born March 12. Gerry Sarno of Bethlehem Steel's sales engineers claims Jim Cavanagh (**) had a boy in March, too.
It was good to see Jack Harned (*) who has been made a general partner at Glore, Forgan; Paul Canada (**), Nob Hovde, and Chuck Carpenter. Other welcome sights were Archie MacAllaster of W. C. Pittman, BobKirby of Underwood Corp., and Dick Healy of Western Electric. Mileage Cup went to the travelingest man in the group, NateRoyall (*), who arrived from Texas via Europe. How else? Walt Baranestky (**) and Mai Hill were also on hand.
Bill Turino (**) became a proud pop last October 6, with the arrival of David Warfield. John Dwyer (**) looked good for himself as did John Teagle, who came in town from his training post at Standard-Vacuum in White Plains, and Marv Kohl who runs the Mars Fudge and Candy firm in Brooklyn. Ken Edelson and Jack Greeley added to the merriment, and Jim Pressey said they'd had a daughter, Katherine, in September. Heard more about Alex Hoffman's new post at Lever, and he and Twinks (**) are counting on reunion. Dick Echikson (**) was on the last day of his vacation and headed back for Herald Square where he'll run the first-floor operation for Macy's. Congratulations to you, gentlemen!
That does it for this month. Will have a rundown on all the details of reunion in a special spot for the July issue, so see you then (as well as in Hanover on June 17!!!!!).
Don't forget to mail money to the Alumni Fund. Biggest goal ever, and everyone's support is urgently needed!
Hanover, here we come!
