Well here we are, Sally and Beck, at the above address, comfortably settled. On the way down your Secretary telephoned the Whittemores in Washington, D. C. and had a short talk. Whit is semi-retired from his position as Treasurer of the Export-Import Bank, but when Castro, Tito or Nasser want a fifty million dollar loan they call our friend Whit. Both Mrs. Whittemore and Whit expressed sincere regards for all classmates. Nice to talk with you, old timer.
The next day after leaving Washington, the Secretary arrived in Florence, S. C., and was sorry he could not stop in Washington, N. C., to call on the Fords. But he did talk with Dave and Mildred by phone and had a good chat with them. Mildred has written it gave them a great lift to hear from a Yankee and it was a great pleasure to chat with Dave, who despite his handicap of being nearly blind can type a better letter than the Secretary. Brave lad, who in his day has traveled the Earth to South America, Siberia, Peking. Retired British Army officer. Doctor by profession. Next to his lovely family and the "Great Master," Dartmouth College and his classmates are close to his heart. Wonderful to talk with you, Dave. Our love to both.
There are three other 1904 men in Florida, and when his next telephone dividend check comes in the Secretary will be calling Jack Sanderson, Bernie Boyle and Kid Vail.
The Secretary recently received a very interesting brochure written by the Chamber of Commerce of Oroville, Wash., sent to the Secretary by Roscoe Smith who lives there - quite a town, Crack Corn. Big Boy from Maine and a former lineman on lack O'Connor's football team. Roscoe, retired, lives off the revenues received from the warehouses he built to store the apples and other crops of the area. Nice to hear from my former roommate at K.U.A. and Dartmouth, freshman year.
Notes from men on sick call - Carl,Robbie, Owen Burdett, Charlie Tubbs, all getting along so-so. Keep going, Boys, we are all cheering for you.
Note from the Leon Websters on a trip to the Pacific Coast sent from Canadian Rockies at Banff and Lake Louise. They found the scenery, as I have the times we have been there, just awe inspiring. Hope to see them in Florida this winter.
Myron and Marie Witham celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Oct. 3. Several members of the family gathered at the Shelburne Inn to celebrate the occasion. The couple have lived in Burlington, Vt., since 1932. Myron, now a retired professoremeritus of Mathematics, was on the faculty of the University of Vermont for fifteen years and then became a member of the faculty of St. Michael's College. In January, 1961, he received an honorary degree of Doctor of Law from St. Michael's College. He is remembered by the class as captain of the 1903 team - which dedicated the Harvard Stadium with an 11-0 victory for Dartmouth — and was named to Walter Camps' All-American football team. Our congratulations to Myron and Marie. The class holds them in deep affection.
"Mention has been made in one of Squid's class letters of the honor conferred upon our beloved classmate John Fletcher - in naming the University of Chattanooga Library "The John Storrs Fletcher Library" in memory of John as one of their outstanding trustees for many years.
Recently, Mrs. Sid Rollins - Louise to all of us - was the guest of Squid's daughter in Winchester. She had just returned from the wedding of her granddaughter in San Francisco - making the trip out and back in three days. Some of our girl friends get around.
These notes will reach you before Christmas- may they bring to all of you a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year - with health, comfort and good cheer. To the girls of the class, the same good wishes and sincere appreciation of your continued interest and support of the "Boys."
Don't forget, your Secretary is a long way from home — perhaps at this time of adjustment, in need of a word from you. So do keep in touch with him and Sally, so he can continue to make this column of interest to all of you. Cheerio - Merry Xmas and Happy New Year.
