Okay, so I opened my big fat column! For those of you who read or remember my raving about the mild weather in early December (when the January column was written) I will say only that within hours after submitting the copy the temperature fell below zero and the heavens opened to whiten our Christmas with a vengeance.
Needless to say all this occurred during and after first term finals when the students had many other things in mind, but there was even more white stuff around when they returned so business has been brisk at the Skiway, Oak Hill and the Golf Course. As usual, we missed the students and at the same time looked forward to getting easy parking places on Main Street for holiday shopping — but that was not to be for the Hanover stores seem to draw from near and far these days. I guess more and more folks hereabouts are beginning to share with us the pleasure of walking out of the Inn and looking across the snow-covered center of campus. The sight that delights takes in the huge star-topped tree dressed in a combination of the natural silver of ice, man's multicolored bulbs and the Baker Tower just beyond it.
The second most enjoyable sight of a winter day for me is to see the smoke from the College , power plant stack heading straight up against the brilliant blue of that cold Canadian air that takes our thermometers down so far. I've often thought that just for variety's sake the College should switch reunions to mid-winter sometime though I admit the tents would be a mite drafty. Even that might be better than the equatorial heat we had the Friday night of our fifth.
