In his office at Alumni Gymnasium we also found lacrosse coach Whitey Burnham contemplating the falling snow and wondering when good playing conditions would finally arrive. Starting his second year at the lacrosse helm, Coach Burnham hopes to field a good, sound team, with depth at midfield, plus a sharp attack and good speed.
On the southern road trip the lacrosse players had one official contest and bowed to always powerful Baltimore 16-9. In scrimmages, the Indians toppled' North Carolina 24-1, Delaware 15-6, and Wesleyan 21-3. On the minus side they were beaten by Washington College 10-9 and Rutgers 15-9.
The starting line-up for '62 includes a good nucleus of returning lettermen, plus two talented sophomores. In the goal is Steve Rotter, a senior from West Palm Beach, Fla. The defensive unit includes three seniors: Fred Cook, Dave Usher, who played end for the Big Green eleven, and Dave Duncan.
Coach Burnham has put together two midfield units. The first is composed of football captain-elect Bill King, Mike Harriott, a standout sophomore, and Bob Baker, a junior. The second midfield group includes Tyko Kihlstedt, Mike Slive, and Ernest Weymuller, a trio of seniors.
On the attack will be a two-year letterman and the team's leading scorer to date, John Walters. On the southern road trip Walters accounted for 29 goals in six games, including five goals and eight assists against North Carolina and ten goals in the Wesleyan contest.
Also on the attack is Ed Cominskey, an excellent creaseman, and Tom Sieminski, the second sophomore to break into the starting line-up. Last year he led the freshman team with 16 goals.
If experience is the best teacher, this year's lacrosse team should hold its own against most competition. At least Coach Burnham is hopeful that it can improve on the 1961 record of five wins and six losses.
