Lt. Alan B. Smith, chief of the Search and Rescue Branch in the Second Coast Guard District, was recently promoted to the rank of full lieutenant. The Search and Rescue Center in the Second District Headquarters handles all rescue cases in the St. Louis area, and, in addition, co-ordinates all cases throughout the district. The Second Coast Guard District covers all or part of 21 states, including 5,100 miles of navigable waterways. Al and his wife, Joan, and son, Douglas Alan, live in Oakland, a suburb of St. Louis.

As we are all doubtless aware, many '58's are still actively engaged in the pursuit of additional formal education. Among recent graduate degree recipients, we find John M.(Cube) Ryan, who was granted the LL.B. degree from the University of Virginia on June 9. Four days later, Harvard University awarded comparable degrees to Pete Eccles,Herb Isaacson, and Edward M. (Mike)Growney. Pete attained cum laude distinction. Herb has since joined the law firm of Gilman & Marks in Hartford, Conn. The Bachelor of Laws degree was also conferred upon Edmund T. (Tom) Maguire at Ohio State on June 7. Tom is now practising in Perrysburg, Ohio. From New Brunswick, N.J., word is received that Alfred (Al) LaBrecque garnered LL.B. laurels at Rutgers University.

Three '58's, Stu Gord, Frank Sands, and Tony Gittes recently obtained M.B.A. degrees from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. Tony is now a staff assistant with W.R. Grace & Co. in New York. He and his wife Carol and daughter, Deborah plan to live in South America. Frank, who served as a lieutenant in Naval intelligence for three years upon graduation from Dartmouth, has now joined his father in business as assistant to the president of King Arthur Flour Co. in Cambridge, Mass.

On July 29, the State Department announced that Stephen P. Dawkins has been appointed a career Foreign Service Officer by President Kennedy. The appointment makes him a Vice Consul and a Secretary in the Diplomatic Service. After graduation and a three-year term in the Marines, Steve undertook further studies at the Graduate School of Business at New York University. He is presently attending the Foreign Service Institute in Arlington, Va., in preparation for his overseas assignment.

Dr. Brendan V. (Benny) McAdams Jr. is now enrolled in the Marquette Orthopedic Residency Program in Milwaukee. Dr. E. Floyd Robinson is a Resident Surgeon at Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston. Another resident physician is Dr. Michael Nevins, whose wife, Phyllis, recently presented him with a practical (for income tax purposes) April fool's present - a daughter, Andrea. Next June, Mike commences two years with the Air Force Medical Corps. Also active in the field of medicine is Joseph M. Stone, who was recently elected vice president of the Northern New York Hospital Association. Joe now lives in Lake Placid.

Dr. Paul M. Robinson Jr., who graduated from the University of Cincinnati Medical School in 1962, completed one year's internship at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in June. Paul and his wife, Wesley, and daughter, Bethany, plan to remain, in Hanover while he continues his medical training as a resident in pediatrics. Forsaking Hanover for a stint in the Navy is Dr. Robert B. (Bob) Keller, who also completed his internship and residency at Mary Hitchcock. Following graduation from the Dartmouth Medical School, Bob fulfilled his degree requirements at Cornell.

One of ten University of Southern California medical graduates selected for membership in Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical scholastic honorary fraternity, was (now) Dr. Peter D. Williamson. Pete plans to specialize in internal medicine at New York Hospital. He and his wife Susan presently boast of four children.

Departing for the moment from the academic sphere, we find that the wide, wide world is no insurmountable obstacle (as the mournful closing lines of "The Pea Green Freshmen" seem to forebode) to many '58's. Among those continuing to succeed in the business climate is Donald H. McCree. Don, who, upon graduation, served as a lieutenant in the Navy, was recently elected an assistant secretary in the national division of Manufacturers' Hanover Trust Co. in New York.

On the lighter (presumably) side of life, several of our former classmates have either tied the matrimonial knot or have, virtually unequivocally, committed themselves to do so. Among those engaged are: Dr. MichaelS. (Mike) Simberkoff, who graduated from New York University Medical School, to Miss Eleanor Weingarten of New York: Kob Goodell, a Tuck alumnus, to Miss Annahirley Gordon, now of Cincinnati; and Joseph J. (Joe) Slotnik to Miss Sandra Lee Kesselman. Joe is now with Blair & Co., investment bankers in Boston.

At least two weddings of '58's took place during the past summer. In Decatur, Ga., Lt. John E. Sherman was married to the former Miss Anne Cameron Williams. John is currently stationed at the Glynco Naval Air Station in Brunswick. Ga. John Goldman, who is now with United Press International, and Miss Carol Mary Fisk also exchanged vows this June. Both are graduates of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.

In concluding this initial literary effort, may I urge all of you to drop me a line, letting me know of your activities and/or those of other classmates.
