To all but the avid ski enthusiast, summer essentially means vacationing, relaxation, travel, etc. To the Class Secretary, however, summer means all of these things and more. It means the annual replenishment of the information coffers, which, for one reason or another, for the remainder of the year, remain sorely depleted. It is, then, only in the fall that the Secretary is faced with a great editorial (as opposed to news gathering and reporting) challenge. In order to give complete, comprehensive, unbiased coverage of all news events of the past summer, it will, regretfully, be necessary, due to space limitations of this publication, to postpone to a future issue a portion of the backlog of the information now on hand. No attempt is herein made to assign relative priorities and I sincerely urge you not to cancel your subscription if the item which you may have expected to see does not appear in this column.
The ranks of the class bachelors (which apparently were heretofore surprisingly strong) underwent a process which has begun to affect collective '58 hair, called thinning. Among the first to succumb since our last publication was Ernie Behrens. He and the former Miss Barbara Krueger, of Hasbrouck Heights, N. J., were wed in May. Al Ertel was one of the ushers. Also married in May, in Rochester, N. Y., were Miss Nancy L. Hurr and Dr. John R. Devauny. John graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1962. Since then he has been a resident in surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. On July 1, the Devannys left Rochester for Portland, Ore., where John is stationed in the Air Force. Bob Fogarty was best man and Dr. Phil Stoddard was an usher.
As might be expected, June was the month of heaviest casualty infliction, with at least five '58's biting the matrimonial dust. BobRodormer and Miss Susan A. Estabrook were married on June 6. Bob is with E. W. Edwards & Son, department stores located in Syracuse and Rochester, N. Y. On the same day in Westport, Conn., Miss Georgia M. Taggart became the bride of Jim Brackett. Georgia and Jim are living in Philadelphia where Jim is a senior at the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. One week later, Miss Sheila C. McDonald and Dr. Al Gazzaniga were married in Glendale, Calif. Al, who graduated from Dartmouth and Harvard Medical Schools, is now a lieutenant in the Naval Reserve in Boston. MikeGrowney was one of Al's ushers.
Miss True E. McDonald and Lee English exchanged nuptial vows in Grand Rapids, Mich., on June 20. They are now living in Ann Arbor, Mich. Dev Bunlap served as best man for Lee. (This seems to have been a big summer for the McDonald clan.) Miss Jane E. Shevlin and Bill Walsh were married in Woonsocket, R. I., on the 27th. Barrington, R. I. is home for the Walshes at this time. ,
On July 11, Miss Joan S. Fleck and FrankRaymond tied the knot in New Canaan, Conn. Frank is associated with Hathaway, Reiser & Raymond, sailmakers in Stamford. They are now living in Wilton, Conn. Also wed in July, in Rome, N. Y„ were Miss Victoria J. Evans and Bill Stevens. Bill graduated from Syracuse University Law School following Dartmouth.
On August 8 Miss Carol-Jane Enman and Tryg Mhyren were married in Amherst, Mass. Tryg works for Procter and Gamble Distributing Co. in Boston, where the Mhyrens now make their home.
We have also received word of several engagements this summer. It is conceivable that, in many cases, marriages have already taken place as we go to press, but no official word of these has yet arrived. Miss Mimi La Taif, of New Milford, Conn., and Dr.Robert L. (Bob) Massucco plan to be married this fall. Bob graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and recently completed an internship in oral surgery at Worcester City Hospital in Worcester, Mass. Also engaged are Miss Suzy Schuster of Evanston, Ill., and Nate Palmer, who is presently working in Chicago. Announcement has been made of the engagement of Miss Kathrine Darling of New York to Dave Carruthers. Dave obtained his master's degree in June from the Yale Graduate School of Forestry.
Miss Judith Anne Maccubbin and TedFurber are planning a fall wedding. Ted has been attending the University of Minnesota Law School. The Peace Corps can now no longer be considered a safe haven for those aspiring to maintain a marital status of single. We have just learned that two of its constituents, Miss Marianna Osborne and Henry Hof are now engaged. Hank, who was formerly a real estate administrator for the Chase Manhattan Bank in New York, and Marianna are both community developers in Colombia.
We also have two new additions to 58 families to report. Marcia and Lowell Wilder have announced the arrival of their second child, Pamela, on March 16. Lowell is now in the Medical Corps, stationed at McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas. They also have a boy, Brad. Also on hand to greet their second, Carl Edmund, were Adele and George (Monk) Failmezger. Carl has a brother, Roger, age 5, and both boys are now being groomed for partnership positions in their father's law firm.
The Reverend Carl McCall has joined the staff of the Board for Homeland Ministries of the United Church of Christ. Formerly director of the New York City Missionary Society's church-community services program, Carl has been named urban church secretary of the board's division of church extension and will serve as a consultant to the denomination's regional conferences on the church's program to meet - arising from urbanization. He will be working particularly in New_ England and tlw Midwest.
An article by John F. Murphy Jr., who returned from Peace Corps duty in May, appeared in the September issue of National Geographic Magazine. Murph spent one year in Tunisia as a physical education instructor and approximately eleven months in the Gabon Republic on the West Coast of Africa leading crews in school construction. After a stint at training new Peace Corps volunteers, which he began June 1 at Oberlin College, John plans to attend graduate school. I am sure you would find Murph's account of his experiences, among which include meeting Dr. Albert Schweitzer, highly interesting reading.
