This has been an extraordinarily slow month with respect to social news developments. We do have three items to report in this category, however. From West "Leb" comes word that Mr. and Mrs. Gerry Garbacz are now the parents of a new son, Geoffrey Alan, born September 20. Miss Carolyn J. Suwalski and Terry Doran announced their engagement in the early fall and were planning an October 17 wedding. The former Miss Judith Maccubbin and TedFurber were married on Sept. 5 in Red Bank, N. J. Ted is in his third year of law school at the University of Minnesota.
Several items of interest in the field of formal education of '58's have popped up. Vince Hovanec, who has been specializing in business and economic news reporting with the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times, has been awarded one of four Russell Sage Foundation fellowships in social science writing at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. The school's director of the School of Journalism described the purpose of the program briefly as follows: "Gaps exist between many areas of the social sciences and the world of public affairs. Our society needs as never before specialist writers for the press with understanding and skill to bridge these gaps." Vince, who is scheduled to return to the Times upon completion of the program, formerly worked in United Press International bureaus in North Carolina and on the staff of the Raleigh, N. C., News and Observer.
