The Bergen County Dartmouth Club started its fifth season on a successful note with the celebration of "Dartmouth Night" at the Suburban Restaurant on October 11. The fireworks and bonfire that we missed on the Hanover Plain were more than compensated for by the presence of Professor Al Foley '20. Billed as "Hanover's Foremost Raconteur," Professor Foley entertained in his inimitable fashion, interspersing jokes about Vermont politicians with his customary anecdotes about college and national personnel. This was the largest celebration of "Dartmouth Night" that our Club has engineered in its brief five-year history. The support by alumni and wives made the evening enjoyable and successful in every way.
But the celebration of "Dartmouth Night" also set the stage for another important item of interest to Dartmouth alumni. Part of the program was devoted to the announcement of the formal beginning of our Scholarship Program. After several years of gathering funds we have accumulated sufficient to assist a Bergen County Dartmouth student with his education. Stephen Shaul '65 of Fair Lawn is the first to benefit from the Bergen County Dartmouth Club Scholarship Fund. A graduate of Fair Lawn High School, Steve is a pre-med student at Dartmouth and participates in many dormitory and campus activities. To further his practical education in the medical field, Steve has worked for the past two summers at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson, N. J., as a medical assistant. The Award was officially presented at our "Dartmouth Night" festivities.
The final item on our calendar of fall events is the Dartmouth-Princeton Smoker, held each year on the eve of the traditional rivalry. We are the host Club this year, and therefore we will make all arrangements. A fine informal program has been planned, much the same as last year when we viewed movies of some of the key games in Dartmouth's perfect football season. Beer and pretzels will round out the evening.
