"Before Joan beats me over the head for apparently not wanting to publicize the fact, I've got to write and report the birth of Timothy Mark, our third son and fourth child on November 7. He got off to a good start by weighing in at 9½ pounds and doing well (well, fairly well) at night and like a true mother, Joan is the only one that hears him," so writes Tim Reed from Valencia, Venezuela. With an added footnote "Just want to mention that gin and tonics are always in season here, and our guest room is ready to take care of any wayward travelers."
A wonderful letter from Kisuk Cheung which I quote in part:
I have been in the Far East for several years to carry out all kinds of construction programs. Some of them are small, some of them big, and some of them are so vital to reinforce the U.S. as well as Free World's physical strength. There are many crises which make our work most frustrating, but always challenging. So many times we feel the pressure of the wide range of cold war that we cannot afford to be the second best. My job requires fairly frequent trips to Korea, Japan, and some other areas here and I am learning much about the Far Eastern elements which are creating the events, as well as which are the results of the events.
One thing I am convinced more than ever before is that after having worked on dams, power plants, locks, water systems, sewerage systems, military bases, bridges - with the people here - is that the American must be capable. The people expect so much from an American in terms of ability. The people here all know that the American strength is based on never-ending endeavors by the university labs, and research organizations. Therefore, we keep everybody busy with the latest design and construction criteria which we receive almost hourly from Washington, D. C. We go out to the hills of Japan and Korea - to work out the much needed projects for the U. S. as well as the local governments by incorporating these latest findings.
Our hats are off to you, Kisuk - our combined best wishes!
