The Northern California scene was brightened for a few days in January by the presence of Professor John G. Kemeny, Chairman of Dartmouth's Mathematics Department, and his attractive wife, Jean. The primary purpose of his visit to the Bay Area was to address the Annual Meeting of the Mathematics Association of America held in Berkeley.

As usual, Professor Kemeny was extremely generous in devoting his time to alumni activities of the College. On January 24, after a press conference, he addressed a group of 250 high school teachers and students on the subject: "Mathematical Creativity from Grade School to Graduate School." The meeting was arranged in conjunction with the California Mathematics Council by David P. Smith '35, our Alumni Councilor, and Lee Cliff '52. Also in attendance to answer any questions concerning enrollment were Jack Clow '52, Association President, National Enrollment Committeemen Pete Zischke '52, Joe Conley '57, Tavey Taylor '28, and Art Young '46.

The next evening the local alumni and wives met with the Kemenys for cocktails and dinner at the University Club in San Francisco. Jean Kemeny joined with RitchieSmith '26 in leading the group in a special rendition of "Old Eleazar Wheelock." After dinner the Kemenys were presented with a "new" mathematical invention from San Francisco's old Chinatown, an abacus. The "father" of modern math then gave a fascinating address about the changing scene in Hanover with particular reference to his own subject. The alumni were astounded to learn that mathematics is now the most popular major. A lively question-and-answer period followed. Present for the thought-provoking and most enjoyable evening were Dr. Bill Washburn '14, Jack Garfein '21, Paul McKown '23, Ed Ruth '27, Al Lathrop '28, Kel Clow '30, Carl Ward '32, Dave Smith '35, Don Waggaman '35, Art Falk '37, Dr. Pollack '38 (and son), Bill Clark '42, Jim Fields '45, Fred Holfman '45, Jim Morse '46, Wally Clark '47, Allan Becker '48, John Nacos '48, Fred Springer-Miller '49, Dave Taylor '50 (and guest), Pete Bogardus '51, Herm Christensen '51, Jack Clow '52, Vince Jones '52, Nick Skylor '52, Jim Wittenberg '52, Fred Carleton '53, Tom Jackson '57, Jack Spring '57, Pete Wardle '57, Bruce Carlson '58, with wives plus Ritchie Smith '26, Tavey Taylor '28, Bob Allen '33, Lee Cliff '52, Jack Shuman '52, John Auerback '53, Larry Eager '53, Bob Wenz '55, Pete Nieman '57, Hal Feuchter '58, and Bruce Hasenkamp '60.
