Reviewing opening paragraphs from the past two issues reveals an unwarranted presumption that anyone might care, much less notice, that our shack was two thirds and then three fourths painted. Never mind how a project could be left 92.6% finished when the snows came, where's the hammer and nails? The basement is 4.1% "finished."
Spif Kerivan has been appointed central region sales manager for Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp. Our former hockey whiz from Wellesley Hills, Mass., who appropriately lives on Wellesley Avenue in Birmingham, Mich., joined the firm as a trainee in 1950. He had tours of duty at headquarters in Toledo and as a salesman and sales manager in Boston, then was named Detroit branch manager in 1959, the job he held up until this new assignment. Spif, wife, and three children will continue to live in Detroit.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch no one has been seen at the hitching post, walking the last mile, or even announcing new progeny. So we'll begin conversation with a couple of items about...
FINANCIAL FOLK - Quite possibly these reports should more prominently underscore the attainments of the trio in this category since each deserves acclaim. We trust someone will find the matters news and pass personal congrats to join the general good wishes of the Class. First, Harry A. Hall Jr. '26 reports that our Harry A.Hall III was elected executive veep and treasurer of Kyanize Paints, Inc. in Everett, Mass. Kyanize sells over $5 million a year, so "Pete" is not just shelling peanuts. Not only is he secretary-treasurer of the New England Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association, Harry recently (October 1) was elected to the board of the Maiden Trust Company. Hope he gets a chance to see Gloria and their four offspring once in a while!
Hank Barnes had a new suburban Phillie address in September but a month later could be found in Rochester, N. Y., where he is auditor for the Treadway Inns. Sounds like a promotion!
Having just returned from a fall fling to France, Spain, and environs, Si Morand called up to say the people at Merrill Lynch were once more being regaled with travel lore a la Si. He also said that your dues checks will now be deposited, so you can balance your check books. If you haven't already sent seven to Si, get with it, lad. Your subscription to this MAGAZINE is paid for with these funds, and so is our memorial books program. Obviously, Si's trip was not. In brief, our chief money man's best anecdote to date concerns a fantastic coincidence of knocking on the door Si thought belonged to the friend of a friend only to find Len Radio inhabiting the apartment and uniquely qualified to help locate the party of the first part by virtue of Len's job at our embassy. Small world!
INSURANCE ITEMS - Sure as clockwork, Jay Wilcox is again listed as a member of the Million Dollar Round Table, the insurance biz elite who peddle one thousand greenbacks worth of protection per annum. Jay is a certified life underwriter with New England Life.
Last summer we learned that DeaneStraiton is on the sales team of the Warrenton-Williams agency in Easthampton, Mass.
Class Chairman Frank L. Harrington Jr. has been elected to the boards of directors of The Massachusetts Protective Association Inc. and The Paul Revere Life Insurance Company of Worcester. He is vice prez-administration for the affiliated firms. Nize going, Frankbo!
GRAPEVINE REPORTS - From time to time we are pleasantly surprised to receive info from Sachems residing in other tepees. You're not surprised if a squaw extolls her brave's feats and a parent can be expected to toot the horn of a modest offspring. Both sources are more than appreciated and every scribe - is deeply indebted to the kind people who' aid him, but when someone from a class a couple of decades removed takes time to forward news, that's something. So now we have a doubleheader from Stan Weld, 1912's Secretary. Many, many thanks, Doctor! First, from the April Bulletin of the Connecticut Historical Society, "Phil Dunbar assumed his new position as Assistant Director and Curator in charge of the Society's museum collections and exhibitions, and the contents and exhibitions at the State House. He has had six years at Colonial Williamsburg and as Director of the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities."
"Culver A. Modisette has been appointed vice president-account group supervisor of Hugh H. Graham and Associates, Farmington, Conn." Cul, past president of the Dartmouth Club of Hartford, is chairman of the Simsbury Development and Industrial Commission and is a member of the executive committee of the Kingswood Old Boy's Association....Danke schoen, Herr Doktor!
LEGAL EAGLES - The barrister bunch must cringe at one more round of the cliche title setting apart their group. But it do let you know what kind of joes are up for discussion, so leave it stand. Dating back to early spring, a news clip heralded a forthcoming talk by Steve Pollak who was reported to be assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States and consultant to the President's Task Force on the War Against Poverty. Previously Steve had been general counsel for the domestic peace corps.
Mal Hill is still in the same upper east side area of New York with a new address at 25 East 86. Okay, but with whom are you practicing what law these days, Mai? And where are your old roomies, Ben Johnson and "Crash" Mcllwain? Must we wait till Fifteenth to learn???
Further upstate in New York, by the by, Bob Deavitt stepped down on July 1 from his post as assistant district attorney in Rock Tavern to become chief attorney for the Orange County's new Legal Aid Society. Bob is a partner in a Newburgh law firm.
ATTAIN AND ACCLAIM - Some of the following stories have lain dormant too long to hold any more logical grouping. They are diverse, to say the least, but each concerns accomplishment worthy of note. For example, Frank Moulton had a one man show in Hanover in September at The Rouge's Gallery at the rear of Hopkins Center. Some 35 oils and water colors were on exhibit. For the past two years Frank has spent full time painting. He is a graduate of the Parsons School of Design and was formerly in the interior design business in Flint, Mich.... When Ken Rothchild was honored by the Twin Cities' Jaycees as Outstanding Young Man almost a year ago, he was quoted making quiet logic about integrated neighborhoods: "People don t have any basis for judging others if they don't meet them...."
GALLANT GATHERING - Making plans for a June jaunt to join the clan? Rick Miller (chairman) has lined up an all star committee to make our fifteenth reunion a great affair: Whit Williams (picnic), Jack Harned (finance), Chuck Gardner (entertainment), Dick Echikson (costume), ChitWhiteman (banquet), Jim Stevens ("Dartmouth Today") and Y-O-U (most vital ingredient). Be there!
