Once again the freshman class is busy collecting railroad ties for bonfires and unifying itself against the taunts of upperclassmen and the sneak attacks of town kids in quest of '69 beanies. Reluctantly, bits about classmates infiltrate via friends of friends, newspaper clippings and occasional post cards.
A prospective member of the Class of 1970 brought greetings from Rod Anderson out Minneapolis way. Rod has been assisting Eddie Jeremiah at his summer hockey clinic out there. Mick Preston, Navy lieutenant, is an aircraft commander in a Naval Unit at McGuire Air Force Base, N. J. His unit airlifted supplies to the Dominican Republic and evacuated American citizens from that country and, generally, takes part in the global airlift of U. S. military forces and equipment. Both Tom Waterman and RogerWaldman received their LL.B. degrees from Harvard back in June. Dick Bareuther was recently named New Orleans District Manager in the Consumer Products Division of the Scott Paper Company. Bill Boyle has been appointed a teaching fellow in pediatrics at the Harvard Medical School and its associated teaching hospitals. He is associated with the Children's Hospital Medical Center. "C. P." Montgomery received his law degree from the University of Virginia in June. Skeff and Beth McAllister cut off the usefulness of hand-me-downs by adding a girl Mary Elizabeth to their previously all-male (Brad and Chuck) ranks several months ago.
Larry Toal has been moved up to assistant treasurer of the Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City. He went with Chase Manhattan in 1961 after two years of service with the U.S. Navy, took the firm's special development program, then worked in "global credit" and at the Rockefeller Center and East Side branches. Larry commutes into the city from his home in Hartsdale, N. Y.
Shiny new wedding rings would give off quite a glitter if we gathered the class for fingerprinting. Ron Kehoe married Frances Gaeta this summer in West Medford, Mass. In July, Dick Schmidt married Donna Jean Matelock in Gates Mills, Ohio. Dick is currently employed by the Federal Government. Here in Hanover, Dr. Don Bartlett married Christine Anne LaPointe at St. Denis Church on Saturday, August 7. Don is now doing his residency at Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester in New York State. If our dues go up you'll know why - treasurer Bill Duggan married Kathryn Gilmartin in mid-August on Long Island. Then again, Bill may not get to sending out the dues notices for one reason or another. Back on May 22, JohnLeander married Arlene Maher in West Hartford, Conn. A July wedding joined Bill Keane and Janet Christy in New London, Conn. The couple took a wedding trip to the British Isles and now reside in Brookline, Mass. Relative "old marrieds" compared to these others, Ed Schwartz and Luayne Kaplan were married in June in Canton, Mass. Ed is associated with the Jackson Hosiery Company. On August 15, Lee Othon took Doreen Gianunzio as his bride in Brockton, Mass. Lee received the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery from NYU last June and began his internship in Oral Surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital on July 1. Pete Paxon gave up bachelor days when he married Susan McKinnon on September 11. Pete is with the Armstrong Cork Company in Pennsylvania. By the time this column gets in print, Fritz Arens will have married Carol Conlon of Pontiac, Mich. Fritz is employed in Columbus, Ohio, by the V. Mueller Company. And very shortly, Doug Adams will marry Judith Skelly of Milford, Conn. Doug just received his Master's degree in Business Administration from NYU this fall and has enrolled in St. John's Law School, Brooklyn. He has been with the Bank of New York in New York City.
Well, I feel like I just out-did the New York Times on wedding coverage. Back to other news - Jack Tonkovich joined the Great Falls National Bank last spring as a management trainee. He took his Master's degree from Tuck and then served with the Air Force in Texas and Turkey from 1960 to 1965. Van Pine, one of our enrollment workers in the funeral business in New Paltz, N. Y., was recently in town on personal business. He did manage to get in a little free advertising, however, for his truck was well weighted down with tombstones. I guess he was able to get up over Pico Peak and then got down the other side like a shot. The Hanover contingent of '59s had an eventful summer: A big black bear got into the sheep Scott Palmer was keeping for friends and did away with about six of them; Greg and Sandy Holthusen spent the summer pulling their kids out of pure mud because the water got so low in Storrs Pond; Harvey Galper of the Government Department moved into his new home out near Golfside; having been a state cop in Las Vegas, Bill Armstrong is back to finish up his degree; I spent the summer trying to find a lost septic tank and building fences and stalls for a mare and a colt which now consume nearly as much as Palmer and Rich consumed at Sunday brunch in Thayer.
Good luck in the argument with your wives over how much football you should watch on TV this fall. Don't forget to rake a few leaves to stay in shape.
