It's New Year's Eve afternoon, late. The office is quiet and I can use this to pass on the word of '27ers that has reached my desk in the last few weeks.
First, you should get this in time to plan a trip to New York, April 28 for '27's annual New York Dinner. Doc Greener states that arrangements have been confirmed by the manager of the Dartmouth Club in the Commodore where it will take place. Word later on the'27 Man of the Year.
Hitch Hitchcock sends Christmas greetings including pictures of his extended family - a boy in the 7th grade; twin boys, Exeter '65 who are applying to Hanover for early admission; a daughter, Smith 65; a daughter, Wellesley '66; a daughter, Ohio Wesleyan '68. Qualifies the Hitchcocks for a '27 record, I am sure. Best wishes, Hitch, on the early decision department. We need more '27ers' sons in Hanover before the grandson department takes over.
Gordon Smith, "Smitty," cartoons a family report on daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. Duke Coulter reports arrival in Los Angeles and 390 South Hauser Boulevard as the new Los Angeles location where Sonia and Frank are settling in. Californians please note.
Chuck Field reports shock from reading in the last issue of Speak that plans are being started for 40th. Says "However, it is logical as my oldest grandchild, Gene s son, was 10 on November 7. My daughter, Dee Norton, presented us with a second grandchild, November 11, named Kimberly Ann. Son Fred is a high school senior awaiting his college board results." Chuck continues "I completed 30 years last March with Chicago Vitreous Corporation where I am Director of Purchases and Traffic, a division of the Eagle Picher Company." He extends greetings to the class for 65. Curt Wright from Philadelphia, for the record, reports the following: resigned: as Professor of Law, Temple University School of Law - appointed: (or commissioned) by Governor William W. Scranton as a member of the Board of Trustees of Eastern Mental Health Center - grandchildren: two, Laura Foulke born 1961, Susan Foulke, born 1963; thus bringing Curt's vital statistics to your attention as well as the Office of Alumni Records. How about your own data?
This column recently carried the report of the retirement among many accolades of Sim Picken, East Orange. Now I report that he has been appointed Assistant to the Headmaster at Newark Academy. Probably a note that should go under the "old fire horse" category and at the same time the Class of '27 should extend congratulations to the Headmaster for the life he's going to get from Jim, and fathers of students at the Newark Academy congratulated for what Jim will do for their boys.
Williamsburg, Va., Gazette reports that Vic Reynolds recently spoke on the subject of "Adventurers in Educational Publishing. As you know, he heads the new University Press of Virginia, which was established in '63. Thus far it has issued about 100 titles for the University of Virginia, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia Historical Society, and the Virginia State Library. Seems to me that's about two titles a week or a major publishing accomplishment.
Governor Rockefeller recently appointed Allen H. Pulsifer to the Board of Trustees of Fulton Montgomery Community College. Allen is an attorney in Johnstown and former Fulton County District Attorney. Sorry the picture in the Gloversville paper won't stand another reproduction job.
Brief note from Al Legacy raves about the weather on Cape Cod and he sounds real bouncy for a retiree.
BUI Ward sends a card stating, in response to birthday greetings, "This time I'm really celebrating, after paying my class dues, by taking a month's trip to Hawaii with my wife, Fran - same one." Another very brief note from California. When on a recent trip West, I tried to call and report in to our Regional Chairman, Bruce McKennan, but was unable to locate him. The next morning as I ran for a train in the Southern Pacific station. Bruce came off another running for his office. Result.— 30 seconds of explanations, apologies, and promises for better planning next time. Si Morand says Chicago has enough snow to supply Hanover for several carnivals and "outside of a few aches and pains and extra pounds I feel like 27 instead of 64 - o.k. — so I exaggerate Merry Christmas."
An attempt to match Caribbean schedules with the Hitchcocks and the Broers failed. Coggy and Sue say they are going to fly to Mexico, go from there to Yucatan and on to Cozumel, so the Hitchcocks and Burys decided they'd wait till next summer and go to Maine sailing.
Yan Ingham, a helpful correspondent, reports the arrival of a girl in their previously all male family. Number two son, John ex '64, was married to Charlene Fry, Wheaton '63. Nine Dartmouth men ranging from '27 to the Class of '64 were present at the wedding. John's on leave from Dartmouth, in Fort Sill, with the artillery and after service he and bride plan to return to Hanover for his degree. Number one son, Sandy '60, still a confirmed bachelor, is editor of the "South River Spokesman," South River, N. J. Number three son, Mike, graduated from State University Agriculture Institute, Farmingdale, Long Island, and is talking of a spring wedding. Van also includes a bit of news that I failed to get, the '64 Annual Dinner of the Cruising Club of America. In addition to other annual citations, the Cruising Citation was awarded Charlie Bartlett. According to the New York Herald Tribune, "Bartlett was rewarded for his many cruises in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador Coast, in various yachts named Gurnet Light and for his contributions to sailing directions for those waters." A well justified award for Charlie's pioneering effort.
Thus ended 1964. Our best to you and yours for the 38 years since we were "grand old seniors."
