Belated gleanings from last summer's doings. The Don Benninks basked in the pleasant warmth of Edgartown, Mass., during August. Dan Daniell had another 50th Reunion, this one of World War I overseas Pilots out at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Opie Horton, holding the home fort out on Long Island, is not too pleased that home ties will probably prevent his usual autumn trips to Hanover and Cambridge for the big football games. BobGriffin had planned on making the Interim but had to cancel out at the last moment - virus, but OK now. Pete Pray also bemoaned missing Interim. The Russ Rices got in a couple weeks up at Little Sebago Lake where they enjoyed "the usual senior citizen sports." Dave Hitchcock migrated to their summer place up at New London, N. H., and found himself so busy with a new vegetable garden and other chores "which is my excuse for not attending the Interim." Bob Bigelow announces his marriage to Mary D. Shenda on June 20 and I'm sure we'll all look forward to meeting the lady in due course. Those of us who knew Geo. Liscomb '07 will be interested to learn, via Lyme Armes '12, that the former has sold the Richard Hovey House in Allenstown, N. H., and is now in New London establishing his famous tabloid. The Geo.Simpsons put in their usual sojourn down on Cape Cod where, it is reported, Geo. prefers the cold ocean to a heated pool. Margy Clough entertained some girl chums while Eben was up in the North Country with Kike Richardson. Geo. Ingalls had an interesting trip from Santa Barbara, via Chicago and Mesa Verde, to Gallup, N. M., where he attended the Inter-Tribal Ceremonials, a colorful annual affair. En route, he enjoyed a brief visit to Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Arizona. Judging by the color cards, that is indeed spectacular country. (P.S. - George and this scribe are twins!) So much for summer gleanings!
Tribute was paid in the December 1963 issue of this column to the Dick Wymans on the 50th Anniversary of their wedding 9/24/13. Avid research now reveals in 1966 other classmates who have reached, or passed, the 50th anniversary of their weddings as follows: the Hal Mattiscms (1/1/15), the Art Sheldons (11/4/15), the EarleCarpenters (2/21/16), the Warren Griffiths (7/15/16), the Chink Chamberlains (7/22/16), the Bags Wanamakers (8/5/16), the Joe Comstocks (9/20/16) and the DoleAndersons (10/18/16). Any others?
A letter from Fletch Low describes his training course in "Vista" and consequent assignment to the Job Corps Center in Tennessee and some eye-opening incidents. Space here doesn't permit more than an indication of the boy-training he has undertaken, to continue for a year or so. The boys' ages range from 16 to 21. About 30% can neither read nor write. Most of them 'phone home and even if a staff member wrote for them their folks couldn't read it. Fletch's letter might well be incorporated in the Dartmouth archives!
Being an old Army man, this flash over the radio caught me a bit unawares: "Join the Army and become a man, unless you're a woman, of course."
We learn that the growing '15 colony down on Cape Cod is due for an addition within the year with the Russ Rices preparing a new home down there.
We are sorry to learn of the passing of Frank Collingwood on July 1 and extend our sincere sympathy to his family. The Collingwoods had lived in Tampa, Fla., since his retirement in 1956.
While a bit nostalgic to some of us, it is good to see the renovation of Hanover Inn well under way. Our felicitations to Jim McFate in trying to accommodate incoming customers during the interim!
A belated bow to Norvy Milmore for the swell job of arrangements for the Interim Reunion last June. As one report put it, Norvie gave 150% in all his efforts. (To an old footballer, it is remindful of how he played football.)
While the Harvard pre-game festivities are now history, it was good to have our appetites whetted by knowing the Boston gang were working on it in early September. By the same token, a safari to the Yale game was in the works with Eben Clough delegated to oversee the peerade and see to it that Kike n' Pearl Richardson got to the game on time. Incidentally, Eben raves about his vegetable garden - carrots, beets, turnips, tomatoes - but "no bananas"! Eben took an August trip to Hanover "on business" and had a wonderful time, bringing back a "lotta fish." He must be in the fish business! He even quotes the Secretary of Agriculture that "man should spend one third of his time working and two thirds of his time fishing"!
Joe Comstock proudly announces that Joe Jr., now at Fort Lee, Va., recently received his Lt. Colonel's commission.
A post card from Ruth Winship in Bermuda indicates complete recovery from her operation and hopes to see us - come football time.
Walt Kennedy sends in an inspirational booklet from his Yonkers Barracks 1028 of World War I Veterans entitled "Wake Up, America" - well worth reading with his own comment of Wah-Hoo-Wah! Walt spent the summer out in Michigan. Apropos of these troubled times, Walt says: "Somebody's nuts and I don't think it's us (we)."
Dick Merrill, now retired, preached at the First Unitarian Society, West Newton, Mass., back in August in the series of union summer services there.
Leon Aronowitz says things are going OK up in Albany and wishes us all a Healthy and Prosperous Year.
Chuck Ingram says that while birthdays seem to come around faster than they used to, he still appreciates our best wishes on these occasions. And Art and GertrudeBoggs steal a march on me with a birthday greeting to me, saying: "Give us a ring if you ever find yourself in this neck of the woods" (Portland, Ore.). Who knows?
Carl and Helen Gish were reported head- ing West to visit their daughter who is a Professor of Russian at the University of Washington.
And so - with football coming down the home stretch, we take time out to wish everybody a good, healthy appetite for Thanksgiving Day coming up!
