As an aftermath of the late wintry blasts, try running this one through your computer: "How cold is it when it is twice as cold as zero?"
At what he calls "The Last Hurrah" Ralph Sawyer was honored as principal speaker at a Symposium January 10 at the University of Michigan on a subject to which he has devoted much time and energy: "The Graduate Student and the Modern University." Ralph says he and Frances are still recalling our "great Fiftieth."
Another classmate drops this one in my mailbox: "I was a late developer and didn't find myself until ! retired"!
A January note from Jack Burbank says they remained on Cape Cod during the winter enjoying all the comforts of home. They see Bob and Kathryn Frothingham frequently. Bob is busy with his hospital committee activities and Jack with his planning duties for the town of Barnstable. Golf-wise, Jack says he shot 2 under 5's for 6 holes!
Speaking of golf, Sid Bull and Dale Barker played 18 holes on the last day of '65 - they say nothing about their scores, but emphasize the exercise! Bob Bigelow dropped in on Sid along in January, having just sold a Wakefield merchant a carload (or so) of chocolates. Sid says Bob looks as young as ever. Anent sticking around on this mortal earth, Sid quotes: "We didn't know anything about this world before we got here, so perhaps there's something to the next one - anyway I'll take this one as long as they'll let me." Not bad!
Muriel Waugh sure gets around. A card from San Mateo tells of a holiday visit with son in Minnesota, a sojourn with daughter and family in San Mateo, a coming visit with other daughter in San Diego, and home in Saybrook, Conn., by April. She hopes we had a good winter - which we did.
Chuck Ingram, commenting on a beautiful bikini-clad specimen I clipped from a Weyerhaeuser advertisement and sent him, says if that's what it takes to get response to their advertising they may switch from their usual brand of picture advertising. Referring to our being snowed-in here, he guesses that people who can stand blackouts and transportation strikes can stand a bit of snow. He suggests moving to the great Northwest to avoid such calamities. (We'll now await some word from the Florida contingent!)
And then comes a card from Bud andTex Doe on their annual expedition to Georgia - they missed the snow but hit 10 degree temperature - the coldest year on record, say the natives. When in doubt — punt!
We wish to correct an error in the March column with reference to Elizabeth Sherman, who is Al Sherman's sister and not Mrs. Al Sherman.
The memorable Alumni Dinner at the Boston Sheraton makes some of us envious. Published reports gave it a big play and a more intimate one from Eben Clough makes this scribe regret that space restrictions prevent reproduction of it here. Eben's powers of description are unique and zestful! Let it suffice that a couple tables of closely associated couples at a dinner were the recipients of a couple rounds of vintage wine engineered by a Sheratonian executive who became enamored of the friendly spirit exhibited by the '15ers and '16ers ensconced at said tables. Fortunate '15ers at the gathering included the Lounsberrys, the Rices, the Richardsons, the Barkers, the Chamberlains, the St. Clairs, Ed Dewing, Marty Martin, Eben Clough, and Ruth Winship.
The George Simpsons went south in February and were reported soaking up the sunshine at Fort Lauderdale. Judging by reports, however, the February sun was accompanied by some frigid weather down there.
Norvie Milmore led some 21 oldsters of the 101 st U.S. (less) Engineers in singing Auld Lang Syne at their last meeting in the old Armory - which has been sold. Our reporter says that while the singing may have been a bit off key, they all went home with fond memories of a lotta good times!
The Chan Fosters and Eben Cloughs got together early in January to celebrate Eben's birthday, following which Dot took off for Miami for a bridge tournament and then on to the Bahamas.
That was quite a stag dinner the North Shore Dartmouth Club put on at the Hotel Hawthorne in Salem, Mass. - set up for 60 and 128 showed up - in honor of the Big Green football champions.
John Healy, down in Kissimmee, Fla. (the Cow Capital), says he expects a lot of 15ers will be coming down that way when the new Disneyland opens up near there, as well as Roy Rogers Wild West not far away. Let's go, Kids!
Pete Pray was heading for a month's jaunt to Florida in mid-February, expecting to tie in with Zeke Carpenter down there for a few days. He says Jonny Mullin is at Vero Beach and feeling much better.
Ruth Winship is taking over the job Helen Rose has been handling so ably in recent years - heading up the 1915 Widows and their activities in Class affairs. Helen leaves quite a mark for Ruth to aim at and a heritage of support from us all.
As if our worthy president. Jack Bowler, doesn't have enough to do with his various activities, I note he's taken a job with Regional Center Planning for Heart-Stroke Cancer. (Did you know that he and RalphSawyer run neck-and-neck as the youngest men (boys) in our Class? Two days apart!) And to show how much Jack has the financial interests of the Class at heart — he labelled me a "profligate" for using a 5¢ stamp on a recent postcard to him. Guess I better watch my step!
Art Sterling advises they were heading off for the sunny breezes of Florida and some peeks at the spring training ball games down there - all of March and maybe a little of April. He's working on another pictorial project for 1915, which will burst forth in all its glory in due course. Can't wait!
Eben Clough, taking some outdoor snapshots of chickadees working on their bird feeder, also took a couple of Margy. Then she levelled off and took one of Eben. Later she started laughing and said: "Your picture ought to be good — I don't think I got your head at all." "You can't win" says Eben!
The Wall-streeters are taking this one in stride — "The market keeps hitting new highs — the supermarket, that is!" Spring fever!
Norvie Milmore has taken over the reins for an Interim (informal) Reunion in Hanover in June - "Monday to Thursday A.M. - come and go when you like." More information is going out to Classmates by bulletin. So - get ready!
A late report saddens us all - the sudden passing of Ash St. Clair who died during a hospital check-up late in February.
