It has been like the "endless summer" in New England during September and into October. Jack and Yumi Smith turned their backs on the fall foliage of Greenwich, Conn., for three exciting weeks in Mexico City. Jack was a referee and judge for the Olympic diving contests which got under way in early October. By this time you might have caught a glimpse of Jack on TV since networks cover the Olympics so completely. October in Greece sounds most appealing and by this time Dick and NikkiSpong should be back in Virginia after travelling through Lebanon. Cyprus, Tel Aviv, and Athens. Their trip began with a visit to London. We hope Dick will send us an account of their Great Adventure. Joe and Elizabeth Millimet's daughter, Madlyn, is also in Greece for a two-month stay. The other Millimets are all off to school - Becky at Nason, Lisa at the Rochester Drama School in Minnesota, and Peter at New Hampton.
Our man in the nation's capital is in the news this month. Joe Cunningham, executive vice president of the Dairy and Food Industries Supply Association of Washington, D. C., has been granted the Chartered Association Executive designation by his professional society, the American Society of Association Executives. The award was made in recognition of his high standards of service and outstanding achievement in association management. Joe and his wife Virginia and their family live in Spencerville, Md.
The B. C. Morton Organization, Inc., recently announced the appointment of William G. Gibson as a registered representative in their Washington office. Bill retired from the U. S. Foreign Service after 25 years in its ranks and is currently studying at the American University for his Ph.D. in economics. The Morton Organization offers its clients a combination of investment and financial services.
If you are in New York City on November 18 and you are interested in financial matters, you can drop into the National Accountants Association meeting at the Statler Hilton Hotel where Frank Weston, partner in the public accounting firm of Arthur Young & Co., will be the guest speaker. His subject will be "Current Activities of the Accounting Principles Board." Frank is a member of the Accounting Principles Board of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. At Arthur Young & Co. Frank is presently Director of Accounting and Auditing Standards. Another New York C.P.A. is in the news. Art Toan is the author of "Using Information to Manage" published by Ronald Press. To quote from the publisher "this book outlines for the manager of a typical manufacturing company of modest size what information he needs to run his company, where to get it, and how to use it after he gets it."
The doctors seem to be on the move these days. Colonel Tom Lane has left the Medical Service Agency at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. His new address is Command Surgeon, Hq. U. S. Eucom, APO, New York. Dr. Henry Bradford has departed from Washington, D. C., and taken up residence in Denver, Colo. He is no stranger to Colorado since he attended the University of Colorado Medical School and lived for several years at Mount Harrison. Dr. BobBright has returned to Hawaii after many years in California. He interned in Honolulu and his address now is c/o Dispensary, Naalehu, Hawaii. Walter Malby has crossed the Pacific and taken up residence in Australia. Since graduation in 1936 Walt has been with the Aluminium Co. of America and most recently as fabrication manager of their plant at Newburgh, Ind. Down under he will be fabrication manager for Alcoa of Australia at Geelong, Victoria. As far as we know, Addison Page is still in Melbourne working as an engineer with the Bechtel Pacific Corporation, Ltd. Bob andRuth Ireland were in Japan during the summer but returned to their Jacksonville Beach home in August. Unfortunately, Ruth broke her hip and after surgery is now using a walker which will keep them in Florida this winter. A recent call to Gil Balkam disclosed the fact that he and Fran were in London for about two weeks. During the summer Gil had to make a fast trip to Chile - obviously for business since he is treasurer of Chilean Nitrate Sales. Jack andNancy Sawyer with their daughter, Nancy, travelled 4000 kilometres in Europe this past summer. They landed in Frankfort where they visited with their daughter, Peggy Vick, whose husband is there on U. S. Air Force assignment. In a rented Opel they explored the middle European countries.
The Art Davidsons of Milwaukee dropped a note in praise of the Alumni College last August. It was Art's first trip back to Hanover in over 25 years and he found the countryside lovely at that time of year. Although he was hesitant about entering into this experience, he says, "let me hasten to advise that while retention isn't what it used to be, all participants enter into the program and do contribute something." Since the Alumni College is to be presented in other parts of the country, you might be tempted to enroll on this endorsement. Norb and Pic Hofman are loud in their praise of the Alumni College - both the curriculum and the association with other Dartmouth families. Their son, Peter, was elected president of the Class of '68 at graduation and will serve in this capacity until their fifth reunion.
We hope this will be a good season for the Big Green and you will have the chance to see one of the games. There are new permanent stadium seats in Hanover to accommodate larger crowds in comfort. Among the freshmen - Class of '72 - who will be in the stands cheering the team and admiring the foliage on Balch Hill will be seven sons of '36 which sounds like a fine representation. Jim Birchall, son of Dr.Bob and Anne Birchall of New Orleans; Edwin Brooks II, son of Ed and RuthBrooks of New York City; Wilson Ferguson, son of Dr. Bill and Anna Ferguson of Sikeston, Md.; Dick Hefler Jr., son of Dick andEdith Hefler of Los Angeles; Don Langler, son of Ken and Shirley Langler of West Hartford, Conn.; Richard Soule, son of Dr.Francis and Elizabeth Soule of Andover, Mass.; and William White, son of Zeb andMidge White of New Haven, Conn. Our best wishes to them for their freshman year at Dartmouth.
Al Whitehill '37, professor of biology atthe University of Maine, all set to marchin an academic procession there.
