The night before the Yale Dartmouth game, the Class executive committee met with the Thirtieth Reunion committee at the Yale Motor Inn in Wallingford, Conn. This joint endeavor really started the ball rolling for our festivities in Hanover on June 13, 14 and 15, 1966. There will be several mailings sent to you between now and then and your prompt attention to them will lighten the work of the committee considerably. Does it seem like thirty years ago you wore that freshman beanie and dreaded the cry, "36 OUT."

Fred Kneip has been appointed vice-president in charge of the corrugated container division of Stone Corporation, Chicago. Fred and his family have taken up residence in Winnetka, Ill. Before joining the Stone Corporation, Fred was general manager of the container division of Union Bag-Camp Paper Corporation.

Dick Jewell is working for our college students these days as managing editor of college textbooks for the Macmillan Co. in New York. Dick and his family returned to the New York area about two years ago. They are again living in Locust Valley, Long Island, where their two sons are attending high school.

Massachusetts is home for a good percentage of our class. In Athol Bob Tyler serves as general manager of the Athol Manufacturing Co., makers of precision tools, measuring instruments and saws. He was recently honored by election to the board of directors of that organization. From Lexington, Mass., came word some months ago that Henry Mascarelle had been appointed executive director of the United Prison Association of Massachusetts. Hank is a former director of the American Correctional Association and has served as instructor in criminology at Tufts University and Boston University. He was the first executive director of the United Prison Association — serving in that capacity for 18 years, from 1940 to 1958. On July 25 in Marblehead, Mass., Dr. James B. Whipple delivered the sermon at the Unitarian Church to celebrate Layman Sunday. Jim is a member of the Religious Education Committee of the Church in his spare time away from his position as assistant director of the Center for Adult Education at Boston University.

Jim Stephens, our treasurer, is sitting in Springfield waiting for you to send your yearly dues his way. 64% of our class responded last year — 69% of the 475 living graduates and 41% of the 108 living non-graduates. Our average is slightly better than that of all alumni paying dues. The Class needs your support.

Pete and Barbara Fitzherbert have been covering a lot of territory since they returned from Europe last spring. Pete, as president of the Auburn Kiwanis Club, attended the Kiwanis 50th International Convention in New York City in July and then went on to a vacation on Nantucket Island. In late September they flew to Denver where they were caught in a snowstorm while the east sweltered. In October Pete flew back to Europe for visits in London and Copenhagen to conclude business arrangements started in May. Their son, Anthony, is in the U.S. Army, but is maintaining his interest in rapid transit. He is collecting material on the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad and he is co-author of an article which appeared this spring in "Headlights" on Philadelphia transit. Samand Jane Morse and their son, Sam, took an interesting trip this summer on the only passenger train running in the state of Maine. It travels from Brownville Junction, Me., to Lac Megantis, Quebec, a section of our country mentioned in the novels of Kenneth Roberts.

Some brief comments have come this way without elaboration. Dave Fox has joined General Electric in New York City after a few years with General Foods in White Plains. General John Bouker, U.S. Marine Corps, recipient of the Legion of Merit, has retired from active duty. Al Butler's permanent address has been changed to Vero Beach, Fla. Al Flouton is residing in Newtown, Conn., making the short trip to Bethel where he is president of Marketing Laboratories, Inc. Bob Ireland has exchanged the Canary Islands for San Pedro, Calif. Johnny Favour is still in Laguna Beach, Calif., where he is finding great satisfaction in teaching school. Jack Arnold is president of J. B. Arnold Associates in Barrington, Ill., and offers consulting management services.

Water has been a sore point in the east this past summer and those of us who commute into New York City were prepared to carry a canteen of it into work each day. Although it never got that critical, the problem is still with us. Up on Lake Winnipesaukee, the waterline was the lowest in memory. Dick and Madine Morton spent as much time as possible at their house on the lake and reported that some people had to extend their docks out into the lake to tie up their boats. Madine also found time this summer to win some golf trophies at the Country Club of Darien.

Retailing is a popular subject these days. Morton May, president of the May Department Store Co., recently announced plans to build its ninth Hecht Co. store in Washington, D. C. May Department Stores now operate 59 stores and the June 5 issue of "Business Week" stressed their program for developing executives. Courtney Catron is president of the Gray Reid Department Store in Reno, Nev., and spent a week in June in New York with his buyers.

If any of your sons love the woods and outdoors, one among us is strategically placed to offer excellent counsel. Zebulon W. White has been appointed Associate Dean of the Forestry School of Yale University and Director of Professional Studies of the school. Zeb was appointed Professor of Industrial Forestry in 1958. Prior to that time he had been a consulting forester in Monticello, Ark.

Anne, daughter of Ann and the late HerbHiggins, was married during the summer in South Strafford, Vt. Anne, an alumna of Georgetown University and the Sorbonne, took as her husband Michael Strumpen-Darrie of Larchmont, N. Y. Michael was graduated from Georgetown and received his MA. from Wharton.

John and Helen Wiesman have deserted the eastern autumn this year to sample October in Colorado and Wyoming.

The mailbag is empty. If I don't hear from some of you, I might have to talk about myself.
