By now the initial shock of the announced retirement of President Dickey has undoubt- edly been absorbed by all alumni. As under- graduates in President Dickey's "freshman year" we possibly more than some other classes can appreciate the tremendous changes that he has brought about at the College. Twenty-five years of dedicated and out- standing service certainly entitle him to leave the Hanover scene with a feeling of satisfac- tion and accomplishment. Nevertheless, it will be hard to find another John Sloan Dickey.
The mailbag brought a note from TownesHarris touring with his family this summer throughout England, Scotland and Wales. If we don't see Townes this fall we'll know that he never came back. A note from GeorgeCrosen reports that the Rocky Hill Bank & Trust Co. of which George is a cofounder and director is proposing a merger with the New Britain Bank & Trust Co,. In addition to his banking activities, George keeps busy as a coach and director of the Hartford Amateur Hockey Association. His oldest daughter is at Skidmore and the other seven children will make college selection and application an annual affair from now on and for many years to come. In light of that we hope that the merger is highly successful. We had a delightful note from Roy "Ben" Davis at 11641 Rocoso Road, Lakeside, Calif. He reports that he is still among the living and he ran into TomChase and Ken Coyne at a Dartmouth picnic at Rancho, Calif. Both Tom and Ken live in Garden Grove, Calif. Ben is working in Los Angeles but living in San Diego. Glad you are still with us, Ben.
Class President, Ed Senghas made his annual pilgrimage to the Alumni College. In addition his daughter Dorothy was one of the "women on campus" as she attended Dartmouth summer session. We ran into a few classmates this summer strictly by accident. Sitting directly in front of us at the Broadway show "George M" and "Giving His Regards to Broadway" was Danny Carroll. Danny was in the process of moving from Cleveland to Chicago where he will assume command of the main office of Booze, Allen & Hamilton leading management consultants. Danny looked as lean and ready to step out onto a soccer or lacrosse field as the day he graduated from Dartmouth. We wish we could say the same. Driving down the Maine Turnpike this summer at 70 m.p.h. on the way back from visiting the boys at camp, we saw Dick andNorma Shribman, had a brief conversation at that speed and pulled in to the nearest Howard Johnsons for a delightful hour's chat and cup of coffee. Dick and Norma were instrumental in founding a new tennis club in Swampscott and Norma is one of its star players. She keeps in shape by riding bicycles at 6:00 A.M. every morning.
Back to big business again and congratulations to John B. Trethaway who has been appointed manager of White Converting Paper Sales, National, a division of West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. The boyish face of Milton "Sonny" Hofflin stared out at us from the business section of the New York Times one day, the occasion being the appointment of Milt as executive vice president of K and J Designs, Inc. a leading firm in the office design and planning field. Milt has been with this firm for seven years in various capacities serving as a vice president. Bill Knight has been appointed a research underwriter in home office of the American Policyholders Insurance Company in Wakefield, Mass. In his new position with API, Bill will assist in developing new coverages and improved procedures as a part of the company's long-range program of growth and service to its agents. Bill's real love is the theatre and his insurance activities are only a cover.
Bill "Winky" Lynn was recently elected treasurer of the Service Bureau Corporation (SBC), a wholly owned subsidiary of IBM. Bill had been serving as director of budgets for IBM at the corporation's headquarters in Armonk, N. Y. Bill lives with his family in New Canaan, Conn. We always wondered why he moved out of Chappaqua, N. Y., at the same time that we moved in.
Austin Lohse is in our news again. He has just been elected senior vice president of American Express International Banking Corporation, the banking subsidiary of American Express. As a senior veep, Austin is responsible for banking activities in the European and African area and the branch offices and subsidiaries of the corporation in Europe. In spite of all these international responsibilities, he and his wife and two children continue to live in Short Hills, N. J.
News from San Francisco informs us that Al Colton has resigned his post as minister of the Episcopal church's second largest parish and resumes law practice in Salt Lake City. Al did practice there from 1951 to 1960. Al was quoted as saying "I feel I can be of greater service in this day and age to my Lord, to society, and to my family by returning to private life." Congratulations go to Tony Anthony recently appointed as a vice president of the S. M. Flickinger Co. of Buffalo, N. Y. The company operates in the tri-state area of New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. In addition to sponsoring retail food stores and supermarkets, it is a distributor to independent food stores, chain supermarkets and institutions. Tony has been named vice president in charge of perishable foods for the company's six divisions.
More honors for ex-prexy A1 Bildner: he has just been elected vice president of Super Market Institute. SMI, with headquarters in Chicago, is the international research and educational organization serving the food distribution industry. Although A1 is president of Kings Super Markets, a 12-store chain, he has found time for many community organizations and we well know what energy and time he has poured into Dartmouth activities. Al and loan, with sons Robert and James, live in West Orange, N. J.
We received a delightful and interesting letter from Dave Biehl just moved from Tucson to Phoenix, Ariz. Dave will be the Phoenix representative for GEICO. Dave moved from Pennsylvania to Arizona about 5½ years ago and evidently is very pleased with that part of the country. He indicates that he plans to get over to the alumni club in Phoenix and see whatever Dartmouth men are around.
The Class extends its sympathies to John F. Day Jr. on the death of his father in St. Petersburg, Fla., on September 6.
