More retirement news. Jack Andrews is leaving the Telephone Company next May but is working up on it in a fine fashion. Starts his '68 vacation on January 5 (one month) then has a three-month furlough which nicely leads him to the magic day in May. Will ski January through March, then south in April, from May through September at their place in South Hero, Vt., on Lake Champlain. Next fall will find them in Steamboat Springs, Colo., building a skiing camp for their daughter and her husband. Our best, Jack, and check in from time to time for those of us yet to jump.
Al Byrne sent Christmas greetings from Shalimar, Fla. Said they have just returned from visiting one son, Lt. Mac D. Beane and wife in Hawaii and his other son, Lt. Donn H. Byrne of Sunnyvale, Calif.
Sorry the MAGAZINE is not in color or I would send you a picture of a well tanned Art Keleher ensconced in his new investment - golf cart. "This shows what a hard life I have down here. 18 holes are too long to walk so I bought a cart. Still have to break 100 but enjoy the sun and good air. Gene Sullivan is to visit me soon from the East Coast - Fort Lauderdale. Will toast the class and feel very sorry for you all in that cold hard world of the north."
By not using the care any good class secretary should use, I perpetrated a great wave of confusion between Mike Choukas,Howie Mullin, Gus Cummings and "a long time not hear from," Warren Cummings. It all happened when a letter to Gus was misdirected to the other Cummings, Warren, in Milan, Tenn. Mike being asked to reply dutifully sent a copy to Gus in Tennessee, I wise-cracked back to Mike, that he better clean his glasses, Gus was in Baltimore. Mike then replies, "as you will see from enclosed (my letter to Gus mis-addressed). I am not the one who needs a fresh clean change of 'diopters,' and I am not the one to suggest who does. What baffles me is that Howie didn't notice the transfer of Gus to Tennessee in his copy, nor you when signing it. More mystifying still - did Gus get your letter of November 27? If he didn't — how could he, if he didn't get mine — he must have been more mystified by yours of December 18 than either of us has been. I refrain from sending a copy of this to Howie, lest he, too, take off for Cuckoo Land. Do you really want the answer to this fiasco?"
Fortunately, Warren Cummings forwarded the misdirected letter on to Gus and for the first time in years, reported as follows: "I enjoy hearing about the fellows I knew briefly in '23-'25 before leaving — I graduated from Brown in '28 - I see Bob Gilboy in Chicago frequently - I am retired from UniRoyal Inc., live in Milan, Tenn., and winter in Florida." Thus, a little good out of much confusion, apologies to all concerned.
All of the foregoing re the "40th Report," which is ready to go to the printers as soon as you tell me if you want this 300-page opus and scrapbook. Wouldn't you know, just as my secretary gets all the pages in sequence and page numbers typed and pasted on each page, in comes another questionnaire. It wouldn't be good old Joe Zyss who could be tacked on at the end, but none other than Ed Baker. Tom Gillespie, who forwarded it, blames it all on his wife bumping into Ruth Baker in Westfield recently. Ed, you will now know why you will be strictly non-alphabetical.
Bill Lalghton similarly missed the deadline with some nice 40th snaps enclosed, with Christmas greetings. He and Mae off to Washington for holidays with family and grandchildren.
Dick Stowe and Kay followed the 40th with a 5,000-mile trailer trip, enjoyed it so much they are planning to head for Marathon, Fla., this winter.
Gordon Smithy Smith's colorful Christmas card gave a plug to '27's 40th.
Merry Christmas from Walt Lashar andSally shows most graphically why they weren't in Hanover in June. All of their family gathered for big family reunion, witnessed by a photo of all 23 of them. Next time bring them to Hanover and we'll get another attendance prize.
Other Christmas greetings and notes to you all from George Friede, the Sam Martins, Frank Amann, and lots more. Red Elliott says Harry Dey (Col.) is back at Staunton after a successful installation of a new hip joint in Boston, almost as good as new.
