This North Country was treated in October to a one-day winter, record snow all day, record cold temperature. How about that to bring back memories of four long but happy winters in Hanover, no plowing, no shovelling, only trudging? Wrote Hovey, "The snow drifts deep along the road" and "The great white cold walks abroad."
George Squier, '08's laureate, has kindly submitted his thoughts in verse:
"OUGHTY EIGHT UP"
Remember that call, long years ago, When we lined up in a lengthy row To defend ourselves from the sophomore crowd. When freshmen hazing was allowed? 'Twas enough to make us freshmen scared But, just the same, we "did and dared."
Now hair is white and back is bent Our normal years of life are spent, What should a healthy outlook be, What is the vision we should see? Turn back the years, let memory roam Bring back the happy days at home.
The days at school, the courting too When friends were many, troubles few, And best of all the fun, I guess Was having your very best girl say "yes." Ah, then, the world was bright and gay - A different world it is today.
Thank God, we have a precious gift To give our aging thoughts a lift, For memory shows old pictures clear, Gives back to us those moments dear, Turn back the years, let memory roam And give us back our Dartmouth home.
