Winter's chilly blasts and the dimple of snowflakes outside always turn my brains into ice cubes and my thoughts to this &$#%$ column. Fortunately, this month my ardours are made easier by the efforts of several of you who have wrote. In light of them ther missies: here are the news.
Dick Welty and Miss Billie Jean Konop of Larchmont, N. Y., tied their futures together in a pretty white bow last August. Billie Jean has most recently been employed with Avon in New York, whilst Dick has been slaving over a hot policy for the Aetna Life Insurance Company in Boston. By the bye, Mike Houlihan of Arlington, Va., was on hand to help Dick through the hard parts of the ceremony. Word has it that Mike was so impressed with the whole bag that he got hisself hitched up in September. What about it Houlihan?? What are the facts?
Dr. Thomas Goodridge has been named chief resident at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D. C. Tom's wife, Karla, is also involved in helping kids; she has considerable experience in teaching the deaf and currently does volunteer work at Children's Hospital.
Jack Beckert has jumped coast to coast and joined the Union Trust Co. of New Haven, Conn. His new title is business development manager, and he is creating and supervising sales training programs and assisting in the sales functions of the bank's officers. Out West he was program manager for employee sales training and sales incentives for the United States National Bank of Oregon. Jack has located Jean and their two children at 19 Colonial Drive, No. Branford, Conn.
Lessee, where now shall the inquisitive eye of Marvin Muckraker turn?? How about this . . . Hartley Webster and his wife, Karen are going great guns with their Angus cattle breeding. They, or rather their bulls, recently took two championships in the Eastern States Exposition. Bully for you, Hartley.
Matthew Friedman is really taking his doctoring seriously. He's working on about six very important medical projects, has already co-authored five studies such as "The effect of intrahypothalmic microinjection of hemicholinium (HC-3) on the hippocampal theta rhythm of cats" I'm glad you're on our side, Friedman!
A couple more nuptial nifties ... BobMcDonough and Miss Marsha Anne Friel did the ring thing way last May (haven't I reported this one before? ... my fear-crazed mind swims). The two are now living in Boston where Bob teaches good stuff to the kids at Woburn High School. June 28 ... big fireworks and white cake day for Parker Albee and Miss Marian Elizabeth Resch of Silver City, N. C. The young ex-single swingers honeymooned around in Europe thence to Falmouth, Me., where Parker teaches history at the University. Miss Susan Virginia Hawkes of Cape Elizabeth, Me., won't be goin' home to daddy no more ... REASON: she's going home to MikeDaley. Seems that they're now all together as of their July wedding in Maine. Mike is with the State Mutual Life Ins. Co. of Portland... oh yes, one David Armstrong was Mike's best man.
FLASH-FLASH: We interrupt the news to bring you some news. It seems that there are several loyal sons of Dartmouth who through no lack of achievements nonetheless fail to gain proper publicity in these here notes. The following folk then should be considered to have done all the proper things... marriage, business promotion, scholastic achievements, state and national elections, good dental health and a safe driving record. No man may ask more than that! James R. Olds - Hero Ist Class; RogerMcArt - National Champion; David Osterhout - King; Samuel Bell - Demi-God with Oak Leaf Cluster; Bennett Tarshish - Conqueror; Joe Zinn - Order Of Merit; G.Ted Perkins - Father First Class; Bob Bayley - Man From Planet X; Steve Bosworth - One of the Dodge Boys; Chuck Ritchie - Eagle Scout; Chuck Dayton - All American Lawyer playing Right Tort; HowardBovers - Broadway Favorite; Frank Greenberg - People's Choice; Larry Holden - Taster's Choice; and finally, an honorary '61 who can't bust into his own class column, Titanic Tom Wahman '60, Pride of New York, Toast of a Continent, Husband of Sue and father to Jessica. A big Wah-Hoo-Wah for all you un-sung heroes.
If any of you resent the fact that some were singled out for recognition ... stuff it! . . . you want mention? Write a note!
Now for a little more factual (and honest) news. Tony and Gin Field, abiding in Paris are, heureusement, the parents of tiny Alexandra Jennifer (known as Tiny Alex, Tony?).
Don Wells got his M.A. in teaching last June from Wesleyan. Go, Don, Go. Another erstwhile student is Dashing DickWright. He's had a busy summer what with going to Indiana University working on his Ph.D. International Business and marrin' up with Ginny Dieckman, former Smithie, current wifie.
Dan Reith has opened his law office in Monterey, Calif. That's very nice country, Dan, me boy ... can't believe anybody does anything against the law out there ... too much scenery.
Scotty Turnbull has been promoted to the post of copy supervisor at Young and Rubicam Advertising in Detroit. Scotty will be working on Plymouth and Chrysler ... hope you can do something to end the "lookalike" commercials them folks been putting out.
That, amigos, is about it. ... WAIT, one more flash ... Fritz Kern was kind enough to write me a long letter, and, mothah, when you write, I print! Fritz and Cora, children Katie and Ernie, are now living in Torrance, Calif. Fritz is the National Parts Marketing Manager for Toyota. He reports that Hank and Lynn Eberhardt are just about to muster out of the Navy in San Diego and that Tom and Sonya McLaughlin are in Seattle where Tom commutes from his island home by ferry to his mainland law office. Dave Loughran has been promoted to Asst. Prof, at our alma mother. Thanks, Fritz, and a good goodnight to all you ores.
