August 26 has passed and I have waited impatiently for weeks for a classmate’s wife, daughter, or girl friend to notify me that the job of writing Alumni Notes for ’48 had been taken over by a female. No such luck! Apparently, I will have to carry on, so here goes.
I usually start by opening the old mailbag and find the usual accumulation of summer contents—two moths and an abandoned mouse nest. The good weather we’ve had obviously kept our field correspondents away from their desks. I can report however that 22 of our classmates changed addresses this summer. If you are still with me—
Arthur Niederbuhl was recently elected to the board of directors of the Saranac Lake Savings and Loans Association. Arthur is also a member of the Pius X Central High School board of education and Saranac Lake General hospital board of directors. He is vice president and general manager of Norman’s Wholesale Grocer Co. in Bloom- ingdale, N. Y. Arthur and Norma have six children ranging in age from 10 to 21.
Congratulations to Dave Meeker who in addition to being president of Hobart Manufacturing Co. in Troy, Ohio, has been given the additional title of chief executive officer. Dave has been president for the past two years.
Over 1,000 people attended the testimoni- al dinner held in Franklin, Mass., for George Wood. George retired as selectman after having completed five consecutive terms and will now devote full time to representing the 14th Norfolk District in the state legislature. In addition to many distinguished guests the main speaker was Governor Francis W. Sargent. It was “a great tribute to a very nice man.”
We were very sorry to learn that ArtKosse has multiple sclerosis. Art is unable to work and thoroughly enjoys the Alumni Magazine, and would be delighted to hear from his classmates. His address is 59 Hargrove Drive, Stony Brook, N. Y. 11790, and I would urge you to drop him a line.
Life in Vermont is agreeing with PhilViereck and family. Phil is elementary supervisor for the schools in the southwest- ern corner of Vermont and enjoys vegetable gardening, writing children’s books, hiking, and cross-country skiing. He has hiked extensively with his son Tim, and daughter Pam is on the high school ski team.
Total Concepts, Inc., a new public relations firm, has opened its offices in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., with Pete Swinscoe as president. Pete has had twenty years’ experience in public relations and advertis- ing, and is a boating and yachting enthusi- ast.
Phil Shepard retired from the Navy (hard to believe that thirty years could have passed) and is working for a civilian company as a research consultant. Phil is in Saigon, but expects to be back by Christmas, and in the meantime his family has moved back to their home in Yarmouth, Me. Daughter Deb will be a sophomore at Farmington State College, son Bill a freshman at the University of Maine in Orono, and Phil and Brownie expect to go to Japan for three years about the first of the year. Their youngest son Andy will go with them so they will be spread over a large part of the globe.
Bob Merriam has taken over as headmas- ter of the Stoneleigh-Burnham School in Greenfield, Mass. Bob has been dean of students at Deerfield Academy. He and Mary have three daughters and a son, ages four to eleven.
Buss Palmer has been advanced to secretary, group division of the Aetna Life & Casualty Company. Jim Johnson, manager of Southern New England Telephone & Telegraph Company’s Wallingford, Conn., office, has been named general chairman of this fall’s Wallingford United Fund cam- paign.
Ed Nadeau recently addressed the Glen Falls, N. Y., Claims Association on “Investi- gation of Accidents.”
