My mailbag is quite full this month thanks to a little direct prodding of those of you from whom I have changes of address. I appreciate your replies. Keep them coming as we are all interested in what you are doing.
I received a fine letter this summer, postmarked Guayaquil, Ecuador, from TonyGittes. It is an interesting one and I want to share it with you. "Greetings from the equator. I arrived in Guayaquil, Ecuador, in early 1967 to manage the Ecuadorian Division of W. R. Grace & Co. consisting of a small pulp and paper mill, a large corrugated box plant (I believe it is still ranked as the largest in the world) which supplies most of the boxes for the export of bananas, and various representations and agencies including the traditional shipping agencies for Prudential Grace Lines, Gulf and South American and Johnson Line. For over three years I had been the president and general manager of these businesses but as of June 18, following six months of difficult negotiations, I became the owner by acquiring 100% of W. R. Grace's stock in these operations. As you can imagine, this means I will be settling in Ecuador indefinitely which my wife, Carol, and four children look upon with mixed feelings! I can assure you though that I personally derived a great deal of satisfaction from closing this deal. It is, after all, a multi-million dollar business with over $6 million in assets and $3.5 million of net worth. Some day, I hope to take the company public by listing in the OTC or American Exchange.
"The chronic political instability and economic problems of Ecuador make the undertaking all the more challenging and I look forward to some very exciting years ahead. I have not been very good at keeping up correspondence with my classmates but I do read the ALUMNI MAGAZINE religiously and get a vicarious enjoyment from seeing the tremendous strides being made by our classmates. I would very much enjoy hearing from some of them—my address P. O. Box 186 Guayaquil, Ecuador." Thanks for the letter Tony and best of luck in your venture.
If woman's liberation means more mail from you about the class I'm all for it. Come on, girls, let us know what your hubbies are doing. I heard recently from Posie, wife of Barry Hildebrandt, catching us up on their doings for the past few years. Barry started his own book shops on the south shore of Massachusetts, first in Cohasset and then in Hingham. "He also bought and operates a small publishing company which publishes booklists and reviews which are distributed through booksellers nationally. We live in a big old historic house (1638) which keeps us guessing as to which repair will be most desperately neded next.... We saw and enjoyed Rick and Nancy Jackson and their three kids this summer on their way back to Kentucky" Posie and Barry have three girls and a boy.
Ginger Caress reports that Ed is continuing to teach at George Washington University in D. C. as an associate professor. "He'll teach an Organic Chemistry course this fall, and also he will be 'acting assistant dean of the Graduate School' for the first semester, while a dean is on sabbatical. In addition he'll be an advisor for the pre-med students. Last year he had several graduate students get Ph.D.'s under his direction, and he is continuing to direct research projects this year. Aside from work at the University he is active in our local Episcopal Church as Christian Education Director, vestryman, and member of other committees... During our vacation we were in Rochester, N. Y., and saw Phil Stoddard. He is continuing his training to become a plastic surgeon." Ed and Ginger have two boys and a girl.
