November finds me wondering about traditions at Dartmouth. Believe it or not, there was a bonfire, albeit a small one, for the Penn game. And from what I gather here on campus, there are several truck loads of freshmen and other interested Big Greeners going all the way to Portland, Me. to gather railroad ties in the wee hours of the morning for the Yale game and Houseparties Weekend this month. Also, there have been several bladderballs spotted on the Green, and Hula Hoops are reported to be making a comeback. The ever-present Frisbee, of course, has never left the scene. And this is the month of the Trustees' monumental coeducation or no coeducation decision. To all of this I can only add what must seem like a tradition here within our own Class: my monthly appeal for those cards and letters to let me know what you are doing, where you are living, and what you have on your minds.
Despite the echoes of desperation from your underworked Secretary, the following has been stolen, sent, or discovered: JackNoon is free-lance writing on topics grave and unknown, and living in Hanover. We had lunch recently and it occurred to me that the woodlands' loss is Hanover's gain. Jack is in good form after working this past summer for the Outing Club at the College, skip Waterhouse finally responded to my snide chiding and brought me up to date on his activities. He cannot be quoted directly due to his choice of scatological terminology. However, the gist of the letter was that Lt. Mark Waterhouse, now living in Syracuse, is presently visiting college campuses and recruiting for the Marine Corps. Skip himself was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device, for meritorious service on Okinawa and subsequently for combat operations in Vietnam. During his overseas tour, he served at various times as Platoon Commander, Assistant Battalion Logistics Officer, Battalion Intelligence Officer, and Commanding Officer of Company C, First Engineer Battalion, First Marine Division. Skip met Kate Watson in Syracuse while he was supposed to be recruiting future Marine officers, and made her Mrs. Waterhouse last month while many of us were at the Harvard game. Ushers were classmates and future lawyers Dave King and Joe Bazzocchi.
In June, Jon Axelrod was with the National Labor Relations Board, the Appellate Court Branch, in Washington, D. C. Jim Brady was in Mittenwalderstr., Germany. July found Dr. GeraldClamon in Saint Louis, Mo.; GregMarshall at Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Center, Mass.; RodneyHawkins in Coquitlam, B. C., Canada, and Cliff Groen working at the U. S. Senate Building in Washington.
As of August, I heard that Eric Hatch was with the Department of English at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Kirby Nickels is in Hanover now. He worked during the summer for the Co-op and will be making his home in the Upper Valley for the rest of the year.
Dave Williams is in Los Angeles, Calif., after traveling all over the world. TedRenna, in Brookline, Mass., is now Doctor Theodore Renna.
Yours truly loves traveling and working at the Dartmouth Travel Bureau. I am currently busy putting together some ski tours that will take me over to the French and Swiss Alps in March. I am pleased also to have won the Class Gift for the '68 who increased his contribution to the Alumni Fund this year by the greatest amount, and thanks to everyone who contributed. The Before and After Party at the Hop during the Yale Weekend at Hanover will be reported on next time. Please let me know what's happening. Yours truly, Eric.
