Wedding bells have again taken their toll among 64's. The casualty list at Bachelor Central continues to mount. Tom Carroll, who has been practicing dentistry in Marshfield, Mass., married Nancy Neylon recently. Tom and Nancy will live in Natick.
John Topping, author of "Southern Republicanism and The New South," recently tied the knot with Christine Young of Long Island. John and Chris will make their home in Washington, D.C., where John is serving as the legal counsel for the president's Advisory Council on Minority Business Enterprise.
Charles Stromeyer, who took a Ph.D. in Psychology at Harvard after graduation, took a bride in early December. Mimsey West, a pert Illinois girl, out-psyched Charles to the altar. The Stromeyers will live in Madison, N.J. Charles is employed by the Bell Telephone Laboratories in nearby Murray Hill.
Sandy McGinnes writes that he andLouise are the proud parents of a 9-pound-4-ounce baby boy. Matthew Tompkins McGinnes arrived just in time for the Christmas holidays, thereby evidencing a remarkable continuation of the McGinnes proclivity to be present at every party. The Class sends its hearty congratulations to Sandy and Louise.
While we are on the subject of expectancies, Bill Barnet, our Class Treasurer, is anxiously waiting for your $8.00 check or money order made payable to Dartmouth 1964. Class dues this year will not only cover your subscription to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, but will help to fund our worthy Class Project which is designed to benefit the Tucker Foundation's Jersey City Program. If you haven't (and most of us haven't) yet sent your dues to Bill, please do so now. His address is listed above.
Willis Goldbeck has been named special assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology in HUD. Willis makes his home in Arlington, Va., these days.
Jim Grace dropped me a great note recently to say that he and his wife, Beverly, and the three little Graces are stationed at the Naval Weapons Laboratory in beautiful downtown Dahlgren, Va. The population of Dahlgren is 393. Small wonder Jim and Bev got lost in the big city of Philadelphia and missed Scott Creelman's party after the Penn game. Jim ran into Chris Vancura at the Penn game, and reports that he looks well. After his stint with the Navy is over, Jim plans to enter a residency—probably in internal medicine.
Blair Clark, probably the youngest resident of St. Petersburg, Fla., wrote recently to say that Gabe Thomas and his wife, Margaret, paid him a recent visit from Frankfurt, West Germany, where Gabe works for S & H as manager of their West German subsidiary. Fred Rothenberg joined the party for an historic sailing voyage in the Gulf of Mexico. Blair has kept in touch with Mike Berne, who is joining him and Gabe in buying some property. The grapevine has Mike planning to begin a new law firm in New York in the near future. Next time Blair is in the area, he is invited to look me up for a game of shuffleboard and a dram of Geritol.
Phil Koebig of Madison, N.J., has been promoted to assistant vice president of the National Newark & Essex Bank. Phil is manager of the credit department in the head office. He joined the bank in 1964 as a management trainee and was named assistant cashier in 1967. An economics major at Dartmouth, Phil earned his MBA at Rutgers. His involvement in Newark activities includes the Jaycees, the Junior Achievement Program, United Community Fund, and Chamber of Commerce. His wife is the former Mawreen Toner of North Arlington, N.J.
Herb McCord was in town recently for a CBS management conference. Herb, whose picture and interview appear in the January issue of FM Guide, was in rare form on his Miami visit. His capacity for suds has remained fairly constant, but the years have taken their toll on his volleyball skills. Herb's team, "Paley's Comets," was soundly thrashed by a two-man wonder unit from the West Coast. Not even the help of a tall, tanned mystery player wearing a suspiciously familiar faded green shirt could stem the ravaging West Coast tide.
Ed Rubel, a '64 who because of three years in the Navy actually graduated in '67, has been making up for lost time. After getting an MBA from the Wharton School of Finance, he joined Bankers Trust Company of New York last March and has now been named assistant treasurer in the Overseas Development and Management Division of their International Banking Department. "Rubes" was married in 1968 to the former Earline Furber and resides on East 54th Street in Manhattan.
Sandy Shapiro, Pete Luitweiler and I got together last week to tell war stories. After our share of zesties, we began placing long distance phone calls to our classmates. Curiously, Perry Butler and B.J. Batch-elder were the only two '64's home on Saturday night. Out of over 800 calls placed, that's a bad showing.
That's about it for now. Please remember your class dues; while you're at it, drop me a line with news about yourself or other classmates. Later.
