Among the classmates who have learned to enjoy the Florida sunshine during the winter months are the O'Learys. Don andMarion have moved over from Sarasota to Coquina Cove, near Tequesta, on the East Coast. We found their new diggings but, unluckily for us, they were out for the day. Later we were happy to hear from them, and we all look forward to meeting them at the June reunion. Incidentally, if you haven't heard about the procedure for securing reservations by the time you read these notes, get in touch with Dave Orr, Hanover.
Chan Steiger told me that he has purchased a condominium in the Tequesta area and spends the winter months there. Summer headquarters are maintained as usual at Longmeadow, Mass. Chan keeps his eye on the large Steiger mercantile interests in adjacent Springfield.
We kept our promise and drove in one afternoon on W. Trott and Rose King in Jupiter. After so many years, it was wonderful to visit with them. They have made Florida their home for sixteen years and are now located in a delightful spot on the banks of the Loxahatchie River. Trott confessed that he has experienced a couple of upsets with his ticker, which preclude his continuance in such sports as sailing and golf. They have made up for these forced omissions, however, by becoming very proficient at shuffleboard. An array of silver cups, filling an entire cabinet, attests to their skill in winning ladies', men's and mixed doubles' championships. Not surprising, when we think back to college days when Trott won the Intercollegiate Ski Jump Championship in 1916.
Karl and Adele Thielscher provided happy hour for us at their home in Palm Beach. They are looking forward to a fishing trip to Canada in the late spring. Meanwhile, plans are progressing for our 55th reunion, under their skillful guidance.
Slats and Helen Baxter (how did you guess?) have been selected to head our Entertainment Committee for the Fun Fifty-Fifth. In a more serious vein, we are pleased to hear that Slats—("Doc" to his Marion patients, associates, and friends) has been cited as having completed "50 years of devoted service to every facet of the town's community interest." A detailed review of this service, termed by the local press a "Golden Anniversary of help to humankind," will be made a part of our permanent class record. Our heartiest congratulations, Slats, on this well-deserved tribute.
Mott and Fran Brown attended the March gathering of the Dartmouth clans at the Sheraton-Boston. Drinking in the details of that memorable occasion with them were Forrey and Lee Emery and loyal Ralph Evans.
We have received a belated report indicating the loss of another from our ranks—Walter G. Burns—who passed away on August 28, 1968. With sorrow, we must also include word of the passing of Nasson S. Young on December 31, 1970. As our numbers become fewer, let us band together more strongly in the interests of '17 and Dartmouth. Our next opportunity to be together is at the Post—50 Reunion, June 14-16. Let's all who can do so, try to make it.
