This writing begins the day after Christmas, Boxing Day, as we called it in England. It has been a quiet Christmas but roost distracting because of a new set-back in your secretary wife's condition at the hospital mailings are delayed. We are grateful for cards and good wishes received. They are particularly comforting this year.
Usual news items have been a little scarce lately. A candid and delightfully frank letter has come from Mrs. Barbara Foote Fales, daughter of 08's late Warren Clea veland Foote and Mrs. Foote, (Gladys U.) Mrs. Foote is very active, keeps a large home in West Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard, loves company, travels a lot. She and daughter Barbara whisk off to Europe nearly every year. All of her family have summer homes nearby. Barbara has the swimming pool, Gladys the tennis court—a nice arrangement, as all the family gather at both places. Winter is spent in Florida. Barbara's older daughter Sandra (Mrs. Howard Hillman) lives in Greenwich, Conn., in winter with her two children. Thus Gladys has two great-grands. Barbara's second daughter is still in her teens and spent last year as a boarder in Switzerland. Barbara spent 25 years in Venezuela, where her husband, now retired, represented U. S. Steel. Gladys travelled down there too, and learned to speak Spanish. Barbara remembers her father as we did—tall, handsome, full of fun and a two-time captain of the Dartmouth hockey team. He taught Barbara tennis, ice skating, and horseback riding. It is hard to express properly our delight at this opportunity to reintroduce the Foote family to "Cleave's" former classmates.
Art Wyman has stirred us up oyer an opportunity missed. He lauds the importance of a framed class picture of our 60th, as a continuing daily reunion, even if seven of the 27 men shown have departed. Quite a thought, is it not! And full proof that Art will be at the reunion in June of 1973.
We have word of the death of PaulMason Batchelder on August 5, 1971 at Austin, Texas. Faithful to the last, Paul has provided in his will a substantial bequest to Dartmouth from his estate. A complete obituary will be found on another page of this issue or in a later issue.
