From 3931 Bayshore Road, Sarasota, Fla. 33580, Herb Harrigan wishes everyone a Merry '76. The Harrigans have just moved to a waterfront house which Herb says is handy for fishing and pelican watching. Herb retired from the Philadelphia Inquirer about four years ago and has been doing editorials for the SarasotaHerald Tribune ever since. He writes "we're up to our ears in the battle against phosphate diggers ... a good fight for a retiree to be engaged in. Obviously, (to anyone who goes there) I couldn't do much to save Philadelphia from its accumulated sins, but this scrap is simpler and sometimes more hopeful." Herb is also looking for more '43s to join him in the area (he is the only one), believing that to be the only way control can be wrested from the '28s and '30s who "really run this place." Bud Silverstein advises that he is recuperating well and has hopes of being back to work in early '76 but complains that not only were Phyllis and he kept from being in Hanover last fall, but his golf game was ruined. His two major goals revolve around being on the first tee on opening day and in Hanover next October for the informal reunion.
Ted Driscoll writes from Marblehead, [emphasis on the last syllable] Mass., that he is still in the construction bueiness. Ted was recently elected to the board of trustees of the Northshore Childrens Hospital in Salem. Ted's son Todd graduated from the University of New Hampshire last June cum laude and is now working for the Granite State Gazette in Lebanon.
Johnny Cooke writes from San Antonio that his activities over the past years include being involved in insurance, securities and real estate. Son Frank apparently expressed no interest in the cold North of New England, but graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Sewanee and earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Texas. He is now working for Dow Chemical in Louisiana. John says that his flying activities virtually ended after World War II and he has not flown in a small aircraft since 1948 - shades of CPT at White River Junction. John and wife Bette were in Boston one fall ago when B.C. played the University of Texas. They visited Bob and Nancy Sandoe '46 who were good friends of theirs in San Antonio. To show the shrinking of the world, the Sandoes have a farm across the road from your secretary in Acworth, N.H.
Final information from New Hampshire for the start of the ski season is that it got moderately cold (minus 17 degrees F.) towards the end of December with good snow for downhill and cross-country skiing. The Christmas season saw a number of 43's in the area with Frank and Margo Hartmann, Ed and Dottie Lider, and Paul and Ruth Young having gotten together in Eastman during the Christmas holidays.
Keep the news flowing.
