Received a copy of Stan Smoyer's letter to Frank Heath in which, "all of the Smoyers want to express our gratitude to the Class of '34 for the gift of the video equipment for the Thompson Arena, which will be used in the lounge named in memory of our son Bill. We were deeply touched that the Class would make its first Class Gift for this purpose."
Had a letter from Roily Wilson from Washington, D.C. The letter was short and I will quote it in its entirety, so all of you can share it.
"In the lobby of the Mayflower Hotel in Washington are 11 groups of plaques.
"On one headed 'History in the Making,' with explanatory text, 'These plaques are inscribed with the names of some of the Mayflower's friends. Leaders in Business, Government, and the Arts who are making and have made history.'
"In the 23rd line, 7th column from the left, sth from the right there appears, Ernest L. Barcelia.
"Thought that ye may like to know this bit of Incidental Intelligence."
I am glad, Roily, to get that intelligence and to share it with all of the Class. Thanks much.
A nice long letter from Bob Engelman brings us up to date on some '34s. He and Mary spent a week with Harry and Pru Gilmore in Sun Valley in January for an old timer's reunion. In the Old Timer's race, Dick Durrance won, but Harry placed third against Nellie Locke, Princeton '34. In deference to Harry's ability, Nellie presented him with a 5¢ medal on redribbon. The picture shows them, along with Nellie's sister, Hannah Locke Carter, who was on the first woman's ski team in the 1936 Olympics. Bob caught a pole on the way down, and finished last.
Harry and Pru spent a week with Bob and Mary at Vail and Tom and Jean Hicks visited at Vail also. Bob and Mary visited Tom and Jean in Guadalajara for a week in March. Bob went on to say that Bill and Irja Wilson and John andFran Lyle were unable to make the Engelman reunion at Vail. Thanks for all the good information, Bob.
Had a couple of Ed Brown's goodies. GeorgeApplin wrote; "Since the cardiac arrest, which benched me for six months in 1973, I have been gradually separated from my role in the working world." He celebrated his last official birthday, his 65th, on January 21. He has some continuing projects with Sears and RPCA, but is getting used to the idea of retirement. Welcome to the club, George!
Charlie Orvis writes from Tuscon that he retired last September after, "32 years work in Arizona Vocational Rehabilitation Division - a program of services to assist physically and mentally handicapped persons to become or be restored to productive, independant lives. June was always last month of fiscal year, so never could manage a Dartmouth Reunion. Dart- mouth was good to me and so also has Arizona been good after illness back in '34. Still have golf handicap and bowling average left." Well, now you can make our 45th Reunion, Charlie, and we will test the handicap on the Hanover course.
I mentioned that the Fred Robbes, the NickNanos and the Cogswells were to have cocktails and dinner on April 2. Well, unfortunately, Commissioner Nanos had a special town meeting called so they had to miss it, but the other four plus Bill Robbe '76, had a great evening together and hope to repeat next year.
This is the last column from Juno Beach, and the next will be from our Wilmette home, and in the meantime, I will have attended the Class Officer's meeting in Hanover on April 30 and May 1. I will give you a report next time. Have a good summer and let me hear about it, please.
