Sorry folks. I blew the December deadline. And I promised Dick Ossen at our 15th reunion that I would never let this happen. Consequently, my Christmas notes became the January notes,, and I hope these will appear in February although I am beginning to lose track of the time sequence.
Thinking back on last November, the class executive committee met at Al Stowe's house just prior to the Princeton game. This meeting was particularly noteworthy by virtue of the excellent turnout for such a remote location. Twelve members showed up including myself, Al Stowe, Seth Strickland, Jon Cohen, Phil Kron, Gene Kohn, Tom Kirby, Arnie Sigler, Dick Ossen, Dick Griggs, Spence Morgan and Tom Brock. Arnie Sigler reported that we are in respectable financial shape, and Phil Kron is developing a strategy for exceeding our $45,000 Alumni Fund objective for 1977. Last year's class smoker in New York City was pronounced a success and may be tried in new areas such as Boston.
Bill and Kay Veech were kind enough to provide me with food, drink and shelter for the Princeton weekend. Bill is taking a year's sabbatical from his professorship in the math department at Rice University in Houston and is spending it at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton along with Kay and their cute daughters, Katie 7 and Maudie 2.
Max Eveleth has achieved another first. He called me a day before Thanksgiving to proudly proclaim (and justifiably so) that his daughter Kirk has been accepted to Dartmouth on early decision for the Class of 1981. To my knowledge Max is first in the Class ot have a child accepted for admission to Dartmouth, but I challenge anyone to prove me wrong.
Joel Alvord has been elected executive vice president of the Hartford National Bank and its I holding company. In this position he will be chairman of the asset and liability committee and will be responsible for the bank's investment activities and for HNC Realty. Joel has been with the bank since 1963 and became senior vice president of the investment department in 1971. In addition to his banking responsibilities, he is a director of Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection & Insurance Company and the Bristol Press Publishing Company. He is also president of the Hartford Stage Company, a trustee of Manchester Memorial Hospital, and a director of the Institute of Living in Hartford.
Chet Hulbert '18 reported in his class newsletter, the 1918 Roar, that he attended the change of command ceremony at the U.S. Naval Station in San Diego, Calif., at which his nephew Commander Bruce W. Hulbert, U.S. Navy, took over as commanding officer of the U.S.S. Southerland. It also appears from Uncle Chet's remarks that he and Bruce are directly descended from Eleazar Wheelock.
I received a couple of clippings from the Dartmouth Anthropology Notes (whatever they may be) indicating that Mike Carroll has. been elected vice president of the Texas Aerospace Services while his wife Joyce has been appointed assistant professor of English at McMurry College in Abilene, Tex. The other clipping revealed that Major Art Hill has been moved from Hawaii to Europe for his last five years in the U.S. Army, after which he will return to Hawaii as a hospital administrator. Art is based in Heidelberg and is presently setting up a program in ambulatory patient care for all of Europe. He and Dot have had a chance to see Paris, Garmisch and the Black Forest, and are planning other trips to famous European spots during leaves. It seems that we are forever following the Hills around the globe. Army life has its advantages.
Jim Adler has very much become a worldwide traveler. He and Brookie and their two boys, Josh 9 and Ted 6, have left San Juan, P.R., after six and a half years of tropical bliss and moved to Stamford, Conn. Jim gave up his position as president of Badillo Compton advertising agency to accept the position of senior vice president of the division of international operations of Compton and now has responsibility for all partner and associate agencies around the world, a job that requires trips to virtually every part of the globe.
I guess I will now crawl back into my cave to hibernate for the rest of the winter. I'll try to wake up in time to pass on some notes in March. Have a nice St. Valentine's Day.
