Thanks to Jed Isaacs and Web Wilde who have send me myriad notes that were returned in answer to the news and opinion survey and the class dues bills, we can mention many classmates this month.

Paul Merriken notes that "Lito" Herrera, his old roomie, has a son on campus in the freshman class. Paul also enclosed a clipping from the February 20 edition of the Plain Dealer in which Jud Hale is featured as the weather prognosticator, Abe Weatherwise, of OldFarmers Almanac fame.

Jud, a nephew of the man who bought the almanac from its founder, has been working for the almanac for the past nineteen years at its Dublin, N.H., headquarters.

This year's predictions read, "1976-77 will be remembered east of the Mississippi and north of the Mason-Dixon line! Extreme cold ..." The forecast went on to say, "The bad news concerns drought conditions in the Western and Central Great Plains ... The real problem comes from the prediction of a dry winter and spring." They couldn't have been any more accurate.

In the article Jud reveals that a former NASA scientist, whose specialty is the sun's gravitational field, works full time with the aid of a computer to produce the forecasts. This is a far more scientific approach than that of the founder who used to rely on sun spots and his mood on the day of the printer's deadline.

Jud warns that the public shouldn't rely too much on specific dates but crows that if one wondered whether this year was going to be a good one to enter the long-underwear business or buy a snowmobile, he could have found out in the almanac.

Mike Fletcher had some less-than-complimentary remarks about the printing job on our dues bills. He recommends that we investigate the purchase of an IBM printer. He then reveals that he has been with IBM for the last five years in their computer marketing division in the Springfield area. We might as well go all the way with plugs and report that Mike has eight cottages in Vermont for rent. No wonder Mike "beats the numbers" every year even though he's operating in what he describes as an economically depressed area.

A note from Rydal, Pa., reveals that DickFrieder is a manufacturer of shower doors and medicine cabinets. He reports that wife Lois is a "champion" real estate person and that he has three daughters. He has seen Larry Kretchmar,Ron Schriber, and Sy Simon during the past year.

Dave Oberlander reports from Dallas that this winter provided seven inches of snow on his street which gave him the opportunity to practice for his later trip to Taos. He is spending much of his time surveying college catalogues to see where his two high schoolers might apply. Naturally they'll get no pressure from Dave to apply to Dartmouth.

Dave Flitner's note informs us that he has been reelected president of the Wyoming Farm Bureau, that state's largest agricultural organization. He also serves on the American Farm Bureau board of directors, a national organization.

It seems that when Chicago played Milwaukee in squash in January, three Dartmouth grads were on the Chicago team which was victorious to the tune of 16-4. TomHamilton was one of the three.

Dan Anzel sends a note that he is now a professor at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. He states that he is, "playing tourney tennis throughout California, divorced, dating, and enjoying life out here." He closes with what we in the Northeast would have to consider a dig, stating that he has been on the beach in Santa Monica for 22 years where the weather is in the 70's year-round.

Finally, Matty Weinberg sends news of the birth of his second son last summer (Class of 1997). He is currently the chairman of the Jewish Community Relations Council of San Francisco.

I believe I have used up all the backlog of news so I hope someone will do something spectacular next month and take the time to tell me about it so we can feed the news-hungry public.
