Since I was delinquent in submitting my last missive, you may rest assured that this one will be a real peach.
At least one of us was smart enough to anticipate Reagan's victory and the resulting resurgence of our once mighty, sometimes maligned, military-industrial complex: Ensign Bruce Mack and his wiffle-style haircut have been graduated from the Navy Supply School in Athens, Ga. Bruce did find a spouse before he shed his locks; she is classmate Sue Astolifi. Sue is going to law school in the town of Bean and her hubby is managing Navy stores in the Mediterranean.
I must admit I find it somewhat disturbing to report the following interminable roster of Dartmouth students gone awry; that is to say, they are going to school near the end of the M.B.T.A. Red Line in Cambridge. Cinda Fernald is at Harvard Law and joining her there are Howard "Le Gran" Hyde, Otho Kerr, and Tom Tullo. All of the aforementioned are finding it hard to make enough time for their studies as they must spend a significant portion of their time tutoring Jeff Immelt '78 in the laws of supply and demand.
Other expatriates who are in Cambridge include Judy Copeland (divinity school), MichelleKane, Mark Horton, and Chip Debelius (all at the school of design). Needless to say, Judy is able to lend her fellow '79s substantial guidance in their studies.
Several of our classmates are figuring out ways to market cap snafflers and pet rocks. Those who are in the advertising business include: Ellen Gomprecht (Y & R) and Beth Blatt (Ogilvy & Mather). They are both in New York and finding out what the irony of poverty at $20,000 per year really is.
It is a true pleasure to be able to note that the first woman Rhodes Scholar from Dartmouth is Mary Cleary; special congratulations to her. Mary is working in the Admissions Office with Jinky Byrd.
Laurie Laidlaw, who is at the University of Michigan Law School, finally convinced ScottRoulston (or was it the other way around) to take her hand in matrimony. Scott is working for a radio station in Southfield, Mich. This sounds like a great idea for a prime-time TV show.
I've been holding off, but I can't any longer: Peggy Epstein wrote and told me to be sure to congratulate us all for winning the Class of 1953 Award. It is either for the class with the highest percentage of Korean War babies, or for the class with the largest number of donors to the Alumni Fund. I'll assume that it is the latter and thank Peggy for her enthusiasm and help in winning this award. In the words of Coach Roby, "Cmon, gang, let's not quit now!" Whether he knows it or not, Peggy also informs me that Jinky is to be the chairman of the participation committee; Jinky will be joined in that role by Mary Cleary. My condolences to Mary for having to spend so much time with a preppy Marine.
I have been told that formerly inseparable chums Cindy Ricks and Cherie Holmes have temporarily parted ways. Cindy is training with Procter & Gamble while Cherie is in the middle of her second year at Georgetown Law.
A note I recently received read as follows: Carol Kurtz is engaged . . . Johns Hopkins Med. I can't figure if he's the finance or the professor or what.
An exception to the work-and-then-escapeto-school syndrome has to be Elanor Shannon; after teaching at Buckingham, Browne, and Nicholas last year, she has found refuge from the rigors of prep school in the real world. Elanor is now with Bane Consulting. MarkSynderman, who everyone knows has always had a mad crush on Elanor, is also working at Bane.
Matt Hurley, who also has a crush on Elanor, is living in Hanover and reading Jack Keroac's On The Road three times a day; Matty says that it is a bit of a grind, but insists that anything that's worthwhile involves some hard work.
1 understand that Karen Thompson is studying social work in Boston; apparently it worked, she is engaged as well.
Other romantic endeavors involve GregJohnson who married Judy Van Sickle last summer. Other '79s in attendance were: TomTomai, Kevin Cullen, and Bob Jahrling. Greg and his wife, who has lovely handwriting, live in N.Y.C. Greg is at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia. On the weekends they plan to attend the bridal showers of the host of other '79s who I understand are also planning on better tax postures for fiscal 1981. More details as our former friends fall by the wayside.
