Edmond "Buddy" Noel Jr. and his mother Rachel received appropriate kudos in the February 1982 issue of Ebony for their involvement as "mother-son college board chiefs." Rachel Noel, "long a crusader for equal educational opportunities," is president of the University of Colorado board of regents, and Buddy, a Denver attorney, is president of the Colorado State board of agriculture, which runs several educational programs in the state including Colorado State University and the University of Southern Colorado. Between the two, they head up the governing boards of Colorado's major university systems. Mrs. Noel has had a lifelong involvement in education and she noted that her family heritage is also one of deep commitment to education. Her grandfather, Andrew William Bassette, started Virginia's first black school in 1895! Buddy is also on the board of overseers for the Amos Tuck School. For those inclined to read more, I encourage you to read the article in its entirety. It provides an excellent insight into the dedication and drive of this dynamic duo, to contribute their time and expertise to the cause of equal opportunity.

Lee Friedman returned to Berkeley from a sabbatical year in England, where he was a visiting professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He indicated that the California sun and Bay Area cuisine were easing his transition back into American culture and that his "tweeds are becoming inexorably closer to jeans with each passing day."
