Sad to report the death of Bob Barvoets, long sought by Bob Davidson in his "Thirty-Nine Out," on September 30 after a bout with cancer. This dreaded disease has taken so many of our good men. (See obituary in this or a subsequent issue.)

We're a bit late with this news, but Harvey Yorke has written and published a "how-to" book entitled The Candidate's Handbook for Winning Local Elections. It is a 168-page guide intended for experienced candidates as well as novices. Harvey comes by his expertise as a former city councilor in Novato, Calif., and a public relations executive. We understand the book was used in the recent elections but we have not correlated the returns to ascertain its effectiveness. Mayhap Harvey could enlighten us.

Bob Van Slambrouck reports that he retired from the 'newspaper business three years ago to "get at some more helpful things and also to spring loose from the routine which, even in the most enjoyable vineyard, grinds a bit after enough years." He teaches a bit, and his wife is in the public practice of Christian Science. They are abroad some, and Bob has made the trip from his home in Bodega Bay, Calif., to Hanover at least once in 1982.

Lew Joel, who retired from his educational endeavors in 1979, reports that he keeps busy doing some property appraisals for the New England Savings Bank, is on a local board of finance and does some volunteer work with some local organizations. He plays tennis yearround and notes that he is afraid to stop for even a few days in the belief that he could not get cranked up again. (Editor's note: We know the exact feeling.) Lew's daughter Vicki, who is married to an Albany, N.Y., doctor, has supplied Lew with his only grandchild a young man of eight. His son Lew has a small law office in nearby Guilford, Conn., and also does male model work for various accounts and has appeared in Tennis magazine, Golf Digest, SportsIllustrated, and department store ad supplements. His younger son flies with Northwest Orient and is on the Scandinavian run at present.

Phil Dressier celebrated his 41st wedding anniversary this past June and marked his 40th year in the practice of law this past September. His son Rob '67 was elected mayor of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., early in 1982, and another son Rick and wife live in Boise, Idaho.

An award which expresses appreciation for the many contributions made to the education and motivation of alumni and former students is given by R.P.I, annually to a member of the faculty who has been actively associated with the college for 20 years or more. The recipient this year of the 20th annual Jerome Fischbach Faculty Travel Grant was Wentworth K. Brown, a professor of literature, who now can contemplate participating in an international meeting as a representative of R.P.I.

And talking about professors, Harriman Jones, who had retired as a professor at St. Lawrence, couldn't resist the call and has been talked into returning for part-time teaching, which "makes him feel young again."

Still talking of academe, Bob Thomas was presented with the emeritus rank for his service to Atlantic Community College and its students. Reverend Bob has recently undergone a by-pass operation which has given him a new lease on life. Still active in behalf of the Lord, Bob and Pat see daughter Barbara, an Episcopal priest in Royal Oak, Mich., when they can, and son Bob, the owner of Connecticut's famed "Bob Thomas Ford" (Hamden, Conn.), more often because of proximity. Bob senior suggests there might be a good deal in the offing if you tell Bob Jr. that his Dad sent you.

John Steele, Time Inc.'s v.p. for government affairs, stepped down into retirement on July 1, 1982, and is now officially a consultant.

Hank White had a big 65 th birthday party this past winter, and in response to a class birthday greeting confessed that he was a lousy correspondent. But give Hank "A" for his effort in responding. He mentioned that he does hear from Oatie Mudge and Jim Feeley, and he was happy to see Happy and Dusty Rohde when they stopped in at St. Louis last spring for Dusty's high school reunion. The Rohdes and the Al Tishmans enjoyed the same Dartmouth alumni trip to Greece in October. Incidently, Forbes magazine did a brief article on the Tishman Realty and Construction Company in their October issue.

Archie Mallon, Tom Brooks, and Bax Prescott were seen at the Colgate game, and Archie made the Harvard and Cornell matches, too.

It is hard to believe, but it is time to wish you all the very merriest of Yuletides, and a bonza 1983, of course. My gosh, where did 1982 get to?

The class of 1939 honored one of its own over the Penn game weekend, presenting Class PresidentBert McMannis, center, with its "Classmate of the Year" award. Making the presentation weretwo members of the selection committee - Endicott Smith, right, reading the citation, and LouHighmark, left.
