Greetings from Atlanta! There was such an enthusiastic response to Anne's newsletter that I now have lots of news to pass on. So here goes!
William Pender is working on his dissertation in the religion department at Duke. He is also working part time with First Presbyterian Church in Durham and living there in a church apartment. I guess he does not go home to be wild and crazy! David Bury is a captain in the U.S. Air Force and is presently working on antiballistic-missile laser design at an Air Force lab in Albuquerque, N.M. He has spent time flying A-37s for the Air Force, and he likes to spend his free time now floating along at 3,000 feet in a hot-air balloon that he owns with friends. Dave also sends word to Rocky Beek that he and a case of Mickey's are still waiting for Rocky's arrival.
Turning to the medical world, Bill Immel reports that he is finishing up three years of internal medicine residency at Georgetown. He and his wife Shelley will miss D.C. when they move to Cleveland in July. Bill will be doing a two-year fellowship in gastroenterology at Cleveland Clinic. Mark Lena feels fortunate to be doing his medical residency in Hanover. He and his wife Kathy are pleased to announce the March 1983 birth of a son, Sean. Despite fatherhood and doctoring duties, Mark still finds time for hiking and skiing. Sounds like a great life! Richard Morse is also pursuing a medical career in Hanover. Richard is an '87 at Dartmouth Medical School, but he is most excited about having become a father last September. Richard and his wife, Betsy Ballard '77, are the proud parents of a girl, Ainsley Elizabeth.
D.Hones Maloney is also in Hanover, but he isn't a doctor - he's married to one. Hones spends his time managing the property/casualty division of a Hanover insurance agency and remodeling his new home in Thetford. His wife, Lisabeth Leach '77, is chief resident in anesthesia at Mary Hitchcock Hospital. Hones also sends word of Mike "G-Man" Glass, who is practicing corporate law in Detroit.
Jeff Krolik is still enjoying life in New York City. He is about to mark his fifth anniversary with Home Box Office, where he is a national accounts manager. His work requires a lot of travel, which allows him to see Kent Pierce in Los Angeles and Peter Endicott in Boston. Also in the New York area is Kim EmersonMorris. Kim married Arnold Morris, a fellow engineer at Westinghouse Elevator, in September 1981. Kim designs software for elevator controls and is also pursuing an M.B.A. from NYU at night. Steve Strauss lives in the Big Apple but sends news of events in Indianapolis. Hugh "Hunt" Dyar was married there in January to Christina Grueninger. The wedding party included Peter Bedini and Dave Banta. Also in attendance were DaveTaylor and a whole crew from South Mass including Scott Kortvelesy, David Lemay, and Curt Conroy. Steve reports that Hunt is a rising superstar at IBM, which brought a number of white-shirted representatives to the wedding.
John Macomber reports that he is enjoying being married and working in the family construction business in Boston. Will Browning is also enjoying life in New England. Last fall he taught French and Spanish at Marlboro College in Brattleboro, Vt. He spent Christmas break in Spain and France (polishing up his accent, no doubt) and is teaching this spring at Wheaton College.
Tod Lenagh sends word of his exploits at Penn State. Tod received his M.S. in geochemistry in December and is now aiming for a Ph.D. in mineral economics, studying the demise of Japanese supremacy in international trades. Tod hopes to be going to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, in about 18 months for a three-year stint. Tod reports that Rod Eggert finished his Ph.D. at Penn State last fall and is now working in Vienna.
Paula McLeod is in Chicago working for Leo Burnett, an advertising agency. She handles the "Glad Bag" account, as she puts it: "Encouraging garbage in more ways than one!" Paula is also planning to marry Jamie Pfaff '77. She encourages old friends who have lost touch but would like to attend to give her a call. Paula also writes that FrancesHellman will finish her doctorate in low-temperature physics at Stanford in the fall.
Jane Lowenstein is studying and teaching linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin. She will finish her M. A. in December and is undecided on a Ph.D. She marvels that all her Dartmouth friends are becoming doctors: Vickie Camerino, Wanda Ryan, and CindyTolbert are in various stages of medical training. Deborah Tarinelli Purvin is also in Texas, living in Dallas. Deborah has founded her own real-estate investment and development company, Purvin and Purvin. She bought 400 apartment units in her first three months of operation and would be happy to receive phone calls from any '78s looking for tax shelters.
Melinda Kassen is enjoying her legal career in Denver, where she is doing waterquality work for the Colorado attorney general. She finds living in Denver far superior to life in L. A., as it offers many more opportunities for skiing.
Well, that's the news from Atlanta. Keep those cards and letters coming!
