As readers of "The Smoker" already know, Harry Chamberlaine-fresh from his tour-de-force as ringmaster of our recordsetting 65th reunion agreed to take over the well-nigh impossible job of class secretary that Hal Geilich was resigning. You also know that fate then struck a fatal blow by calling Harry ad astra less than a month after our reunion.

In an effort to fill the void president DeWitt Mallary has asked me to add the secretary's duties to those that I have already been handling ever since the death of Dan Ruggles as "Smoker" editor. My literary agent, Esther, has urged me to accept the title with the following amendments:

1. My responsibilities will be limited to writing this column, while continuing to publish quarterly issues of "The Smoker."

2. Hal Geilich has agreed to continue writing the letters of condolence to new widows or next of kin.

3. As the only classmate who by Christmas of freshman year had memorized all 411 names in the Green Book Ort Hicks has offered to write future obituaries. You will see his initials on some obituaries in this issue.

In a spirit of charity the three of us ask you to be patient while we struggle to whip this triumvirate you Latin majors will surely remember that Rome was not built in a day-into a working press worthy of 1921. And I beg you to keep in mind that no column can ever exist without frequent postcard news from all the rest of you!
