I'm writing this very soon after having picked up the Sunday paper to find that Dartmouth had ended up on the business end of a 66-12 score against UNH. I was fortunate not to have been there. I'm sure a few of you had to endure it. It would appear that college athletics have now become a matter of trade-offs. As a Dartmouth alum, do you want a winning football program? Do you want Dartmouth to handle UNH as they did in 1963? It is important to your image of your school that the Big Green push Cornell around the field? It may well be. But then we've got to pay for that. Do you want to pay for a good football team? It just isn't like it used to be. We had so much fun watching winning football teams in green that all the other schools wanted in on the fun. Now it's a jungle to field winning teams.

My last column was a compilation of all the mail I've gotten (you'll note there WAS no last column). There are a couple of items to include here. Bob Bach of Stamford, Conn., has earned the American Compensation Association's Certified Compensation Professional designation. This is a nonprofit group that consults on employee compensation programs. Bob had to pass six comprehensive exams required for certification. If those had been six sociology comps, that would have included one heck of a lot of drinking!

Roc Caivano has been named an associate of the architectural firm of Venturi, Rauch and Scott Brown in Philly. He's been with the outfit since 1983. He is currently project manager for Thayer School and recently served as project architect during the construction phase of the New Primate Center at the Philly Zoo (it was modeled after the Beta House).

I hope by the time this hits your mailbox that the Big Green has thrashed a few Ivy League football teams. That will make for a warmer Thanksgiving.
