First things first. Thad King and his wife, Suzanne, recently celebrated the birth of their fourth child, a young lad by the name of Chase. Suzanne is an orthodontist in Atlanta with her own practice. Thad, as many of you know, is an attorney who is in the business of real estate development. Thad has been an extremely active alumnus as a member of the Alumni Council, treasurer of the class, and he is currently serving as a special appointee to an ad hoc committee on the Trustees.
Congratulations are overdue to David Leuschen. The Wall Street Journal reported that David was recently made a partner in the investment banking firm of Goldman, Sachs.
John Blatz was recently appointed general attorney at the Emhart Corporation. John joined Emhart's legal department in 1980 and most recently served as group counsel for the Glass Machinery group, the company's ACMA packaging machinery unit based in Balonia, Italy, and the Fellows Corporation, its gear-shaping unit. He also was the company's environmental counsel. John was a magna cum laude graduate of Dartmouth and received his law degree from Minnesota. Before joining Emhart, John was engaged in private practice and was a member of the legal department of the Scott Paper Company.
John Woodhouse is a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy, and recently received the Meritorious Unit Commendation as a member of the Commander Submarine Group Nine. He received the declaration for his meritorious service in support of the goals and objectives of the United States Pacific Fleet Submarine Force from August 1982 to September 1984. During that time the command developed and implemented procedures and programs instrumental in the successful deployment of the first three Trident submarines in the Pacific.
My old friend, Phil Maloney, was also recently honored. Phil was inducted into the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons during ceremonies at the Association's 54th Annual Meeting in San Francisco. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons is the largest medical association for musculoskeletal specialties. To become a member of the Academy, each member must have completed medcal school plus up to five years of specialty study in orthopedics in an accredited residency program, passed a comprehensive oral and written exam, been certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, and completed a membership process prior to admittance. Phil, congratulations.
Sophocles Carinos was recently married to Ellen Pappas in Ipswich, Mass. Sophocles is currently working for the Ipswich Shellfish Company.
And the historic Old North Church in Boston was the setting for a marriage last spring for Karen Gateman and our classmate Mark Palmer. Mark earned a law and business degree from the University of Colorado after Dartmouth. He is currently engaged in the private practice of law. His wife is currently employed by the United Bank of Denver.
Congratulations are also due to John Leibert, who has been named president of Manufacturing Decision Support Systems, Inc., in Cleveland. John began his career with IBM, where he worked for eight years in the Cleveland Branch and left the company as account executive. He received a total of eight Percent Awards, given for meeting quotas. John's company, Manufacturing Decisions Support Systems, Inc., is a pioneer in creating software solutions for manufacturers. Formed in 1968, the company provides applications software, software services and consulting to diverse manufacturing users.
