Well, I finally got accused by a close friend of just plain making things up. That hurt. Look, I can handle the label of "incomplete, incompetent, and incoherent." Take Betsey Arledge Kirk's letter for example: "Well, almost. My husband's name is Mike Kirk, not Bill Kirk, My name is spelled 'Betsey,' not 'Betsy.' Mike has his master's degree from the U. of Idaho, which is in Moscow, not Boise. And he's not my boss. He's the Senior Producer for 'Frontline.' But thanks for the mention. Sincerely, Elizabeth Arledge Kirk." See, I can deal with constructive comments like these. Anyway, I promise that everything that you read here does have some element of truth. Ho, Ho.
Sue, I hope that your dad, Dick Goodman '53, is paying attention. Wouldn't want this to all be in vain. Dick's daughter, our very own Sue Goodman, recently graduated from Columbia Business with an MB.A. in finance, thus completing her time there during which she made the dean's list and was selected the Charles H. Brunie Scholar. Sue plans to be married this fall to Bill Cohen, UVA '80, an economist at Shearson Lehman Brothers. You may remember him from our fifth reunion. (Or you may, in the case of some people, remember nothing from our fifth.) Anyway, Sue is training with Citicorp Investment Bank to trade securities, a.k.a. "wheeling and dealing."
Jim Schley has progressed from "print to stage," if there is such a phrase, and toured the East Coast this winter with two theater groups. He performed in Girl in First Position with the Expanding Secret Company and in the Hunger Cantata with the Bread & Puppet Theater. One of the performances occurred in N.Y.C., where he saw MaryAnne Yanulis, Brenda Gross, Paula Sharp, and Jon Poor. By now, unfortunately, it's too late to witness Jim's acting prowess as he should be in Barcelona, Spain.
Now that everyone's relaxed, I may slip a couple of weddings in on you. AndySchoder, John Long, Miriam Shire, SkipGill, and John Carson all were married in the not-too-distant past. Look, now that you're involved, why not hang on for the ride? Skip Gill married Yve Novello, a former colleague of his at American Express, last November. John Carson married Suki Stone in February. Suki went through Virginia undergrad and business school and works as an assistant treasurer in the capital markets section of Morgan Guaranty in N.Y.C. John trades bonds for Morgan Stanley. At the wedding were Tim Gent, JohnDolan, Tom Tomai, Bob Jarling, Chip Fauver, Charlie Hatton, and Paul Bullock.
Miriam Shire took off long enough from her Manhattan assistant DA's job to get married and have a honeymoon, both excellent choices in her estimation. The lucky man is Michael Wien, a partner in the law firm of Austrian, Lance and Stewart, and the honeymoon was in St. Moritz, naturellement.
The class of '53 is having a banner day here since Andy Schoder's father should also be reading proudly of his son's accomplishments. Andy married Ann Freeman this winter. She's a graduate of Yale and works as a vice president in institutional sales for Eberstadt Fleming, Inc., in New York. Andy is still with Dean Witter in their mergers and acquisititions group.
I have just one question: is the New YorkTimes the only paper that prints wedding announcements anymore? Clearly not, since John Long's marriage to Louise Lauzon showed up elsewhere. These two doctors have managed the rare feat of training at the same hospital, Mass General in this case. John is in the middle of surgical training and Louise is completing her residency there.
Jim Cioban is taking the plunge, albeit not the marital one, in starting his own business in Connecticut of advertising/public relations for "high-tech" or technology oriented companies. Life won't be as sedate as those years with IBM. Jim wrote of running into Owen Dempsey (back from Europe) on the Hanover golf course during Winter Carnival. As always, '79s should feel free to drop in on Jim but just be sure to bring some business.
Yes, they play a lot of Softball in Atlanta. Steve Dorvee practices law and his home run swing down there, occasionally running into Walter Elliott on the field of battle. Steve's wife, Margaret, works over at Business Week. The word around town down there is not "Becks" but that Charles Perrin is married and working for a living. Sound familiar? Steve was going to check his sources to make sure that Charles really had been recently promoted in his work with Delta Airlines. Hey, Steve, don't bother, it's in print now.
Jeff Price highlighted the fact that life in California isn't all worry-free by voicing his concerns over the lack of good skiing over Christmas. Jeff is a financial analyst for Chevron in San Francisco and lives nearby in Walnut Creek. Defying the saying that "never the twain shall meet," Jeff visited his East Coast friends, the Simonds; RogerSullivan, and Peter Robinson, over the Thanksgiving Holidays.
