Greetings from Atlanta! This month I am fortunate to have received news from classmates. The most amazing source was seeing Steve Mandel on the "Today" show, analyzing trends in retailing and retailing stocks. While Steve sounded very professional, I was disappointed he could not work in a Dartmouth plug during his spiel. Next time, Steve!
I also received a great letter from Steve Strauss, reporting the recent wedding in New York City of David LeMay to Connie Ayars. Connie graduated from Skidmore, but Steve reports she spent time during her undergraduate years at Bones Gate. Apparently, Connie picked up the Dartmouth spirit, as engraved cards with the words to "Men of Dartmouth" were handed out for a rousing rendition of the song at the reception. David and Connie planned to honeymoon in Paris, and then return to New York where each will resume a legal career. David does communications and bankruptcy law at Hughes, Hubbard & Reed. Connie is an associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore.
The wedding served as a big reunion for former South Mass Hall '78s, plus two men from other classes—Jim Giddens '59 and Joe Rendini '76. Hugh Dyar and his wife, Christie, live in Darien, Conn. Hugh is climbing the corporate ladder quite successfully at IBM, and Christie writes for a fashion magazine. Curt Conroy is enjoying the lifestyle in northern California, where he manages real estate for Metropolitan Life and awaits the big earthquake. RobertFieldsteel continues his acting career in Los Angeles. In addition to theater roles in Los Angeles, and television commercials, Rob has a part in the movie "Miss Firecracker" opening this spring at a theater near you.
Arlo Frost and his wife, Stephanie, came to the wedding from St. Paul, Minn. Arlo is a veterinarian, while. Stephenie works for an HMO in the area. Arlo and Stephanie stay busy raising two future Men of Dartmouth. Peter Bedini zoomed up to New York from the Washington, D.C., area, where he claims to work on the space program at the University of Maryland. Steve reports that Peter makes a suspicious number of trips to visit our NATO allies and wonders if Peter is really developing Star Wars.
Two '78s who could not attend the wedding sent news. Scott Kortvelsky and his wife, Ingrid, recently made the move from lovely Pittsburgh to the tropical shores of Hawaii. Scott is reportedly practicing ophthalmology, but it is hard to believe anyone actually works out there. Peter Dame and his wife, Jill, are living in Jacksonville, where Peter practices law. Last, but not least, Steve Strauss continues his work at the Metropolitan Transit Authority in New York, where he claims to have eliminated graffiti from the subways. His next project is to run for Democratic district leader (like an old ward boss, but no more graft and corruption). Thanks for the news, Steve!
I also made a few calls to collect news. Mary Lou Teel had recently completed a camping mini-reunion with three other '7Bs. The women, with spouses, spent a weekend at the Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, N.Y., which served as a base for hiking in the surrounding mountains. Rose Gasner is practicing law with the Society for the Right to Die, a patients' rights group in New York City. Marty Altemus is a psychiatrist, working at the National Institute of Health in Washington. JackieKaiko is a vice president at Chemical Bank in New York, in international banking. Mary Lou is working as a producer for CBS News "Sunday Morning." As a producer she travels a good deal arranging story coverage. After some inept questions on my part, we determined her job is much more like "Broadcast News" than Mary Tyler Moore. The work is interesting and she has the pleasure of working with Charles Kuralt, a fellow North Carolinian and an excellent journalist.
My last call was an unsuccessful attempt to talk to John Hugus. I did not get him, but his parents told me he is now an orthopaedic surgeon in Wisconsin. Well that's the news. Send more!
