It seems I was somewhat of a I late starter when it came to offspring. More and more classmates are reporting the college plans of their children, the latest being Fred Becker, whose son Jeffrey will be a member of Dartmouth 1996. To pay for the next four years, Fred continues to work in Boston, where he is involved in the syndication of equipment lease investments (I'll just pretend I know what that is). Fred's father (also a Fred) is class of '38 and bursting with pride.
Bruce Alpert is another classmate with progeny at the College. Two sons, Seth '93 and Jeremy '95, have Bruce and wife Jeanne commuting on a regular basis from Memphis to Hanover. The few moments he spends in Memphis, Bruce is developing a cardiovascular research institute—not easy in an age of shrinking funding. This is of course in addition to his regular work at the University of Tennessee Medical School. Bruce has kept up with Jack Bolger and family. Jack is in the printing business and travels extensively when not attending Twins games at the Metrodome.
Marlboro College, located in a Vermont town of the same name, now boasts RichardHouse as a member of its faculty. Previously an assistant professor of Russian and French at SUNY, Oswego, Dick will teach Russian, French, and linguistics at Marlboro.
Matthew McCarthy has been elected senior vice president, general counsel, and secretary of Wetterau Inc. Matt joined the company in 1974, moved to General Grocer Cos. in 1978, and then back to Wetterau as a result of Wetterau's acquisition of General Grocer's Shop 'n Save chain. Seems they went to a lot of trouble to get Matt back in the fold.
Parker Addison continues to work for Appalachian Research and Defense, handling civil cases for low-income people. "Most of our cases involve the basics of life—protecting peoples' homes, incomes, dealing with family problems, sometimes access to education and health care." Parker also serves as head of the Consumer Law Task Force for Legal Services in Kentucky. He and his wife, Barbara Dixon, live with their two children in Waco.
On October 12, the Kent School in Connecticut dedicated the Gifford T. Foley Hall, the first building in its ongoing consolidation project. Giff was a member of the planning committee for the project and an active alumnus until his death in 1990.
