Flo Barker, widow of Nelson, writes, "Nels was blind the last 11 years of his life. His interest shifted from bird photography to recording bird songs. In 1961 he produced three records and they are now on tapes and still selling to benefit the Quarry Hill Nature Center in Rochester. I often meet people who worked with Nels, and invariably they mention his high professional standing and his great courage. I am still upright and functioning (90 in July) and active in a food-distribution center I helped establish for eligible people in need of food assistance. We have three children, ten grandchildren, and 17 greats."
Don Sawyer writes in May, "Last week Jo and I were walking back to our car after shopping at a supermarket when a car, making a left U-turn into our lane, was going too fast and hit me in the back, knocking me to the pavement. The store manager dialed 911 and within minutes I found myself in an ambulance on the way to the emergency room at Florida Hospital. Miraculously, no bones were broken, but I had two gashes on the back of my head which had to be stitched, and of course they took umpteen X-rays. After five hours I was released, and Jo, who had been with me all the time, was able to take me home. I am still sore in spots but have discarded my cane. I really feel lucky to be alive! The police report says the accident was caused by careless driving." The class of 1921 agrees with the police and rejoices drat Don has recovered.
