There's always at least a handful of'9os in Hanover, it seems. On September 24 seven of us, including myself, gathered at RobinPlager's place for a mini-reunion. Robin is in her third-year rotations at the Dartmouth Med School. Mark Simmonds and BrianUrkowitz are first-years at Tuck (along with Jay Benson and Bart Osman, who couldn't make it to the gathering). A coach of the men's freshman crew team, Chris Schmidt filled us in on what was going on at the College. Mark Schiffinan has been working for John Rassias's Language Outreach programs.
Meg Devine is now in her second year at Tuck after a summer in Cincinnati at Procter & Gamble. Karl Benedict has received his M.D. from Tufts University. He also received the Zarren Family Award, which is presented to a senior student who has demonstrated excellence in clinical cardiology. PhilPrivitera is now in his third year at Boston College Law. He has been named the director of the American Bar Association Law Student Division's volunteer income tax-assistance program. He's trying to get all U.S. law schools to participate in the program. His work so far has earned him an award for outstanding and meritorious service.
In a publication called Hartford Metroline, Michael Lowenthal wrote an article comparing Dartmouth's acceptance of gays and lesbians today to that of our graduation year. Despite continuing setbacks, the gay community has come a long way in the past four years, he wrote. There are now at least six openly gay professors on campus (up from one in 1990); openly gay students live mainly on campus (rather than off); gay students, even first-years, are finding it easier to come out of the closet; gay courses are being taught; and gay cultural events are being held, he added.
People are writing to me via e-mail, and that's great. Did you know that there's an Inter- net list server at Dartmouth that broadcasts news from the College as well as messages from list members to all subscribers? It's adminis- tered by Carey Heckman '76. If you're inter- ested send an e-mail to with the following information: name, class, e-mail address, kind of computer system, any current Dartmouth affiliations (club/class-related work-optional), and what interests you hope Alum Net will serve. If you have any kind of access to Internet mail (AOL, CompuServe, Prodigy, MCI Mail, or any service with an Internet gateway), you can get on the list.
