I received e-mail from John Corbett, who is in Nariobi. I remember John as always upbeat, smiling, and taking life in giant strides. Sounds like he still is. "Jeanne and I have three delightfully energetic children, Rebecca will be 7 in September, Rose will be 6 in December and Jack, well, Jack is 2 (we trust we will survive until he is 3!). The girls greatly enjoy horseback riding it is 'English' and looks odd to me, but then they are really learning to ride where I figure I just sit quite comfortably on a horse.
"We just returned from a wonderful homeleave. We spent time with both sets of grandparents (in Denver and Sheboygan, Wisconsin) and managed to show off the USA Rosie loves McDonald's.
"Life in Kenya has a suite of opposing factors. The country is very poor and the corruption is huge. On the other hand, the majority of Kenyans are wonderful, the countryside is beautiful, and of course the safaris are world class. All in all there is a balance, though you would never describe life here as having an even keel.
"I thoroughly enjoy my work—l utilize GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technology, and ICRAF (International Centre for Research in Agroforestry) is part of a group of centers (now 16) spread all over the world. I get to travel to fairly exotic places (last year I was in each of the three major tropical rainforests) and my compatriots come from all countries and many disciplines (most relating to agriculture/soils/economics)."
