Not a great deal of news this month. McClintock seems to have cornered the (market in his newsletter. Big thing is our 50th Reunion. By now all of you should have received some info from Ed Scheu about the Reunion book. Please get back to Ed as soon as possible—and don't be shy about telling us all about yourselves. Don't forget the picture—so all can see how marvelous you look. Most of all, plan to be there!
I spoke to Shelton Pogue. He lives in New Bern, N.C., has been there manyyears, and retired. Said Rick Kelly and wife Margaret stopped in for a visit last year. I then reached out for Rick. Found him in Scarsdale, N.Y. Was unable to speak with him because he was rehearsing a play with his local theater group. Rick's been retired from NBC for five years, but is still active in theater work. You will recall he was head of the Dartmouth Players and manager of DBS. Thank you Margaret, for all the news.
Bob Nelson is out in Portage, Ind. He's still in the organ and piano business. Says things are a bit slow but has no plans for retirement. Found Tim Haxtnett in Bayfield, Wise. You all know where that is—on the shores of Lake Superior. Tim retired from Corning Glass in 1982 and then spent eight years in a 45-foot ketch. That's right, eight years, four in the Mediterranean, four more in the Caribbean. I'm sure some of you have done a bit of sailing, but doubt any of you can top that.
Harlan Brumsted has published a book about wildlife research. The title is VoicesFrom Connecticut Hill, which isn't in Connecticut—but New York. It's about the plight of the famous ruffed grouse, which all you hunters know as a partridge. Did I know? No—"Brummie" told me anyway. He's spent most of his time since retiring from teaching at Cornell in 1991 on this work.
Via the College's information service have learned that Frank Lundblad was honored last spring for his many years of ski patrolling. Frank lives in Brunswick Me., where he is known as the "grand old man" of the mountain. How dare they use the word "old" for a 46er? Congratulations Frank for all your work in a most demanding task. I was also advised that our Doug Leigh was honored for one of his oil paintings. The title of this work is Girl Watching. Gave me a bit of a start, such an unusual subject to spring forth from a Dartmouth man. It shows Mexican farmers at an outdoor market, a theme Doug no doubt gleaned from watching square dances in Norwich and Thetford many years ago. In any event, the art pundits were impressed because the painting won an award at the 17th annual Ridgefield (Conn.) guild of artists, and was later put on display in a gallery. Doug's a former art director for several New York ad agencies, including his own. Oh, where is he? Weston, Conn. Congratulations Doug!
That's all for now folks.
