December 1951: The varsity swimming team opens up with a win over Bowdoin. '54s scoring points are Steve Mullins, Rolf Engelhardt, John Heyn, Phil Pendelton and John Wolfer. Rolf Engelhardt not only swims, he skis to White River Junction in minus 19° temperature at I a.m. for ham and eggs. Ralph Destino was passed a $350 check by a swindler. (His first business lesson).

Yankee magazine featured SinclairHitchings as one of its 60 special people. Sinclair has been keeper of prints at the Boston Public Library for 30 years. As reported: With a tiny acquisitions budget and the "enormous power of his personality," the library has acquired a depository of prints and drawings now totaling about 76,000 items. He is described as perpetually awhirl with "great bushy eyebrows that wave like flags, and cheeks that are continuously bunched up in a beaming smile, and a conversation as tireless as the dance of leaves in the street."

Bob Sokolski spoke at the 109th commencement of Jameston Business College in Jamestown, N.Y., in June. Bob is president of Whirley Industries, which was founded in 1960 and now employs 450 who manufacture promotional products. Customers include McDonald's, Burger King, Hardee's, and Walmart. Bob's community activities have kept him busy: president of Warren PH Cos., a community health-planning agency; trustee of the Warren YMCA; vice president of Crescent Park Health Clinic; former board president of Warren General Hospital; and past member of the Warren Borough Council.

Dick Lewis has been elected to the board of directors of Boston Mutual Life Insurance Cos. of Canton, Mass. (A matching gift company?) The company was established in 1891 and has expanded throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe. Dick is a retired partner with Ernst and Ernst, where he was director of International Insurance Services. He joined Ernst and Ernst in 1958, became a partner in 1966, and, thereafter, was managing partner in Portland, Me.; partner in charge of consulting in Sydney, Australia; and Northeast region director of insurance services. He also serves as a member of the board of directors of Howell Laboratories Inc.

Don Brief has been performing surgery on the golf greens. This past summer Don played in the New Jersey State Golf Association's 37th Senior Championship, shooting an 82-84 for a two-day total of 166. He finished 19th, only eight strokes out of second. (How many three putts?)

Best wishes for a happy holiday season to all!
