We devote this issue to clearing from the desk a collection of communications gathered over too long a period. Rich Bradshaw leads the list with a report (and jolly photo) of a rehearsal dinner for Sue's granddaughter attended by 14 Dartmouth alumni at The Chase House in Cornish, N.H.
Next, a lovely letter from Bob (Mathes)Cox, lamenting Paul Weston's passing and telling of the hours Paul spent with him beating into Bob's brain the tenor parts for use with the Glee Club Quartet which consisted of Bob, Dan Rollins, KenHurd, and Kewpie Farmer. Bob currently writes poetry, music, and letters to the editor and has written a book, The LittleStorekeeper, telling the history of his family's McKeesport, Penn., store.
Henderika Smart has given up the house in Connecticut and has moved back to a flat in Holland, where she and Jack once rented.
Betty and Frank Ripley are currently touring in South America with a Dartmouth tour which hits the Galapagos. Hope they are untouched by the three-way battle for the presidency in Ecuador. While we are on the subject of Dartmouth women, Rip told us that 33 widows of 1933 gave $6,000 to the Alumni Fund in 1996 and $15,000 in 1995, including a memorial gift from Jean Krans. Bravo, Ladies!
Paul Zamecnik has been so loaded with honors that another might seem surplusage, but the last reported was the distinguished Albert Lasker Award for Special Achievement in Medical Science and recognition of the "monumental importance" of Paul's contribution to science. He provided "the tools for deciphering the genetic code and then later was the first to conceive of the successful use of anti-sense DNA for the highly selective inhibition of gene expression." That's what the Dartmouth Medicine story said.
Mary Jo and Bob McDonald sent us snapshots of last September's minireunion, including a group picture of those dedicating the Jack Manchester memorial tree on Tuck Drive.
June will mark the 64th anniversary of our departure from the Hanover Plain. Anybody game for a climb up Balch Hill?
